I had to sell my 68 GTX about 3 years ago, and now I may go get another one. My old one was a numbers matching car. I believe it had the correct partial vin on the transmission and rear of block by oil pressure line. This owner of this 68 says there was no vin identification on 68 440’s. Did some 68 440’s come with vin and some didn’t? I want to make sure this car is numbers matching before I lay down this kind of money. Thanks

What is the scheduled production date for this car? Should have the last 8 digits of the VIN on top rear of engine and top front of trans case. Also check the assembly date on the front pad near distributor. Should be close to the SPD. Mine was 6 days prior.

As stated earlier not all 68 had vin stamp on rear of engine, but the stamp on pad would be your best indicator for numbers matching,n while your at it check exhaust manifolds, steering box.wiper motor etc as these all had a manufacturing date n they should coincide with the build date of your car, especially if the seller is asking top dollar

This is what he sent me:
Engine Year (1968) Date Block was Cast (10-18-67) Date Engine was assembled (12-21-67)
Engine Block Pad # D440 HP 2 High Performance
Engine Block Pad other # 12 21 2 (Dec 21st)
Engine Casting # (2536430) RB (raised block) 1967 TO 1972
Engine Serial # (PT440P23376299)
Engine VIN # (MoPar did not put vin # on Pre 1969)
Tranny VIN # (MoPar did not put vin # on Pre 1969)

I had a 4/68 built GTX and it had VIN stamps.

As long as the SPD of the car is not more than 5-6 days of that build date of engine i would say its original

By federal law starting 1/1/68 the VIN was supposed to be stamped on the engine & trans... And from what I've seen Mopar did... More so on performance models vs bread & butter type cars or luxury cars... Fact is most November & December of 67 cars had VIN stampings... That all said I have a 9/67 SPD Coronet R/T with no VIN stampings....

anything is possibe, but I also never saw one without it. even pre 1 Jan 68 build, which was the law. Chrysler began to comply with the law prior to 1 January, and my 68 383 GTS built Nov16 67 has the Vin on both the engine and transmission.I would be very sure
before I sprung for it. at a top dollar price.

On my ‘68 GTX, built 12-29-67 has the sales order # on the rear upper block lip by the oil sending unit. It not the vin. Sales order # is on the radiator support too and fender tag

So, I should have either a partial vin number match on the engine or the sales order number?

that is amazing, i have never seen the SON there. But it is very logical when building the car.

so it has a build date of May 10th 1968 if what I see is correct?
If so the law required the eight digit VIN

So if the build date of car is May 10 n build date of engine is 12-21 there is no way that engine is the original motor, unless you really want the car i would start running away from it now

If that is what you are seeing, the engine is not original. you should be seeing april 20th at the earliest. but even then The correct engine built after 1 Jan will have the correct VIN on that block.

I am not trying to confuse the topic, but I have a 1967 440 TNT Chrysler, and chrysler even took the time to put the VIN on that car, although the law did not require it.
so they were way ahead of Ford and GM in documenting their cars. Which is why they are worth more today, and why it is 100% likely that engine is not original.

I would also look very closely to see any grinder marks around that spot where the VIN should be. Just call me suspicious!

I’m going to look at it Saturday. I’ll take my bore scope camera and get a good look back there. That’s what scared me was the build date and engine date were too far apart.

Nothing to be scared of,you know the seller is bull shitting you if he saying its original, there is no more than 7 days from the time of engine build n car build
