It's pretty sad that I've had to buy multiples of many of my brake parts due to the incredible lack of knowledge by parts resellers and counter help. I'm adding Summit into this thread too. I literally had to take stuff I bought online back to the local parts stores to return incorrect sizes, sides of the car ect. I'm not kidding.....every order for brake parts these people came up with was incorrect.....11 in vs 10.....right vs left......rear vs front. Unreal....
 
Don't know, my local auto store rarely gets it wrong nor has Summit for me?
 
....and believe me, I get annoyed at myself for just going in a buying crap with triple checking it.....
 
Consistently a low paid job, big companies buying out the little guys, a computer that only can look up parts from "what year car", younger people who get hired because of the low pay with NO experience or knowledge about cars.....
 
Summit has always been a dead ringer for me, customer service takes time to walk thru with me and we agree then proceed NEVER any problems.. I also deal with a nice mom and pop place near me and have excellent connections at the local dealer and the one my friend works at.. so I always consider myself good.. on mopar or domestic parts. Foreign sucks!
 
Yeah - just yesterday I went to my local lawn mower dealer in town to buy my mower parts and maint stuff there to get my equipment ready for summer. It's been there forever...an old type shop with guys that know what they're doing. I could go elsewhere and pay less; but liked to give them my biz and have been given tips on repairs over the decades. The old guy there told me they can't find employees who can do squat and biz slowed down so they're hanging it up. That neat ancient building will probably be torn down to build yet more friggin apartments with vacant ground floor retail as half the town has them already. The whole old flavor of the town is mostly gone and going.

Well - when I go to a few cookie-cutter parts places I like the questions I get such as requesting wiper blades for my Dakota as they gawk at the computer screen: "Is it a four-wheel drive? What is the engine size? LOL. Hell didn't know the 6 and the 8 motors had different size wipers!
 
I know somebody who got a 67 Chevelle hood and he paid for a 71 Charger Ram hood LOL.

When Edelbrock had available the IAS shock absorvers they kept selling the B body front shocks valid up to 79... when we all know since 73 they are diff. This includes Summit. Sure they simply trusted on Edelbrock because is how they had listed those like that, but if you searched for KYB they were rightly listed. So nobody paid attention on this "weird" inconsistent about applications ?
 
I've never had a problem at my local O'Reillys. That's basically the only "Big Name" place I go. Everyone I've talked to is knowledgeable and one even had a '70 RR so we chat about Mopars from time to time. The other guys all have old cars and one races at a local Speedway. Pretty lucky I guess.
 
This thread rings close to home as i spent the last 3 days dealing with local parts stores trying to buy new brake shoes for our 68 GTX. I finally just did the research myself and gave them the part number to order and hopefully get by the weekend. The kids at these stores have no clue how to find the older parts but I always support the local shops, not a big fan of "online stores".
 
I agree I like to do things in person or speak to someone in person that I feel understands what I’m doing.. Again customer service needs help! I just went to Home Depot and rang myself out on what I purchased, it pisses me off as it’s someone’s job and it’s always nice to speak to someone!

I'm with you on that my local Orielly has been good to me. It has a car guy staff at the counters (mostly ricer guys), and they like their job. I'll say one thing about Orielly that can't be disputed is their warranty and return policies are stellar. I got tired of being hassled by the other guys every time I returned a defective or wrong part.

Boy, I'll tell ya what - if you can get decent quality shoes from any parts store, you're doing better
than me.
The stuff they sell nowadays through the usual suppliers just plain sucks - especially in the years after
the banning of asbestos.
I'm right now about to start the process of gathering up all the drum brake stuff for my own '68 GTX and
I've narrowed it down to either the serious metallic linings Rick Ehrenberg sells on eBay or the stuff from
musclecarbrakes.com, which are probably even more seriously metallic in content.
Gotta replace the asbestos with something serious, after all...and the parts store linings I have on Fred right
now might as well be made of paper.
 
I buy most of my auto parts from Rockauto. They have the largest selection of parts and usually have the best price. Years ago I tried to buy from the local guys but most of the time they were limited to which brand they could order and the price was sometimes double. If I do need a part from a local parts store I will use Rockauto for a part number.
 
I'm lucky to have an old-school parts store right next to me, we used them in high school days, and they've always been great. they have been taken over by a national company but all the same old people work there so it's still a great place, having said that if I can wait for a part I will order it from RockAuto and get the same part allot cheaper, it's a shame but true.

Just think of the BILLIONS the gas companies profit on with "self serve"...

What I have come to like about Rock Auto is you can pick what "brand" you want to buy... Of course who knows where and who owns "that brand" nowadays is always questionable
 
we have a decent Napa here Debco/Napa
all older people & the owner Debbie (& her husband) an old dirt racer
they do pretty damn well

it's not a big store at all, lil' small shop in back
but the people upfront know their ****

I either buy there or Summit Racing, have it in 2 days usually
never really had much trouble with either place

I always research the parts, get the part #'s etc.
before I buy or walk-in, just in case
that way I get what I ask for

The big-box corp. parts stores are horrid for customer service
& they (powers to be) want to give them a $15 min. wage
they don't deserve the $10.50 min. wage now

many of the managers aren't much better

we will have a huge change to self-service, customer kiosks
welcome to the "new world order", literally

sad most the kids/or even older folks (not all of them)
that work in these bigger stores/corporate setting,
don't know **** or don't care
it's just a job to them
if it's not in the computer they are "mostly clueless"

I worked in a parts store as a kid, between school
Monument Auto Supply, Concord, Pleasant Hill & Antioch
it was a different time too, yes a simpler time in many ways too
but;
I knew parts & #'s & cars/trucks in general,
even the repair or machining side
many times, I'd go out & look at their cars
to help & identify what they wanted or actually needed
it was surprising how many people that didn't know ****,
but would try to do it themselves, like I said it was a different time...

Most gas statios are franchised any more. Their profit comes from the convenience store side. On gas they make about a 3% profit.
My brother worked in the parts business for ages. The problem is people order the wrong parts and when they dont work or fail they bring in the lawyers.
That is why they sell you what the computers say what works and the manufacturers say what the part fits. This way the store isn't liable. And the store realizes they dont need to pay for vehicle or parts knowledge, only someone who is a keyboard warrior.
