Fan Clutch Too Close to Radiator

With my 1964 Dodge 440 426 Street Wedge 4 speed,I have the same problem with clearance. But it is because I want to use my 1965 Plymouth 426 Hemi radiator, and it will not allow clearance for a fan clutch. So today I am going to reinstall the factory radiator and go from there.

How many core's in that tank?

dmoore - Looking down though the cap I count 4 cores.
Went back to stock radiator in the 64 and looking down through the cap I count 3 cores and with a factory stock 7 blade fan I will need a 1/2 to 3/4 spacer to get it right.

Someone added that 4th core?

No...It is a factory stock radiator for a 1965 Plymouth 426 Hemi...part number 2524972 .

Also besides the part number 2524972 is DD, directly under that is CD and then AC next inline to that.
I hope that helps. You can also google that part number for reference.

Ok, so factory 4 core...interesting

This is simply not true. Flex fans can - and do - "grenade", sometimes with truly dangerous results.
At the least, they damage other surrounding parts (like high-dollar radiators) when they come apart.
You wouldn't want to be under the hood doing anything when one did, that's for sure.

I have a piece of one fan blade lodged in the ceiling of my shop from someone revving an engine up with the hood open and the guy was standing over it......i heard a bang and the rest is History. Luckily no one was stuck in the forehead with it. I never used another one after that....they also make a lot of noise.

mopar oem flex fan 3462190...Anyone have or had a problem with this factory fan coming apart?

Taking a closer look at one of the fan blades, I found a small tear on one of the blade tips. So this thread saved me from having it come apart somewhere in the future. Lesson learned from all those who shared their knowledge and their experiences with flex fans. Thanks to all of you.

And that's how it starts...consider yourself lucky!

demoor---Boy do I!
It is the information and problems that others have when shared that benefit all of us and make us aware and help all of us solve some of our own.

Right on! As long as I have been doing this **** learning NEVER stops!

I think the main problem is when people use Flex-A-Lite fans that are NOT rated or even advertised for high horsepower cars. On the labeling and on their websites it even says not to use on cars with more than 2XXHP or above a certain RPM range. They’re for small motored appliances.

I’d consider a Derale or similar flex fan that’s specifically made for high RPM high HP Motors. Has anyone seen a professional flex fan come apart? Or has it always been the cheap $30 ones?
