I am changing my fuel pump on my 68 charger to a in line electric pump. Can I
mount the pump close to the current one or do I have to mount it by the tank?

All inline fuel pumps work best within about 3-5 feet of tank and below lowest level of tank. They "push" fuel. They will last longer if used w regulator that returns fuel to tank. Deadheading fuel pump causes heat.

Any idea how to remove a fuel push rod with a mushroomed end.

I have he same problem. Had to leave it in, .....Unless you want to pull the camshaft. My 440 was under my workbench for a few years, and i did not realize I had the issue untill I was installing it in the car. Oh well!
Holley electric pump and return for me!

I think I am going to switch over to a electric pump. What would be the best spot to wire it in?

Just did this last year on a buddy's car, was able to get a 1/2 or 7/16 box end wrench on it through the pump hole and get a good grip on it, took a fewgood yanks but it finally came out.

When I had an inline one, I used a tubing cutter and cut a section out of the factory steel line just in front of the rear wheel well on the rear frame. Used steel tubing to barbed fittings and then connected with "quality" rubber hose. It was close enough not to cause an issue drawing from tank and it was below the lowest fuel level. You are going to need to run a relay from your switched power to the pump using minimum 12ga wire.
