Great tour yesterday, no pukes from anything at stops and starts. No leaks, nadda. Went out in the shop this morning to a mess of trans fluid that got past the dipstick tube O-ring.

Running in Neutral the dip stick showed about mid way between add a pint and full. With the tube now out I'm noting the Full mark is well ABOVE the tube O-ring. Is this normal???? Or is this dip stick too short, thus overfilling the transmission based on the dip stick reading.

I'm talking a lot of fluid draining out. I don't know what is on the floor, but my cookie tray caught this much when I pulled the tube. Converter drain back after shut down???

I stacked two consecutive sized o-rings and RTV'd them back in, but would like some confirmation on static fluid level in the transmission. Should it actually be above the case hole for the dip stick tube???

THANKS!

Gotta love that torque converter drainback ! Only leak I can't stop on my car is from the trans, only after it sits for a few days though. If I drive it a few days a week it doesn't drip a drop.
But yes, static fluid level, vehicle not running is above the dipstick o-ring.

Yes it will read above Full after sitting everything in the trans and torque converter is above that point.
Level will probably close to where your thumb is after sitting.

I thought you were the answer guy around here?

HEY.. I gotta ask one once in awhile! Just a tad pissed off today.... was hoping my dipstick was too short again!! LOL

As said it will be above the case. Most of the time the tube is tweaked enough to cause the sealing issue. Don't laugh but holding a piece of paper along your picture of the tube it is slightly bent.

Went out and checked and I have 5" from the bottom of the dip stick. Car's been sitting for a month.

2500 Ram liked to do this when sitting (overfill the tube) so the last time it did it I didn't add any. It's about a half pint low when checking in neutral and I leave it at that.

..Said no guy EVER!! lol

I would buy the deepest trans pan i could find, lower the filter/pickup with a spacer, and retain the same amount of fluid in the trans.
Just like you would do with oil level in a race engine
(Well, maybe not the deepest engine oil pan, lol)

If you put a rod inside that just fits past the depression for o-ring. then tap with a small hammer as you rotate dip tube. Idea is to make depression shallower. never tried it so.....

I run a deep pan with filter extension like Post# 8 said. I don't know for sure how much fluid is left in converter after it drains back, but I would guess a quart. I add 6 quarts to new deep pan and check fluid level on dipstick with engine idling in neutral. I drill a small hole in dipstick at this level as new ADD mark. Then I dump another quart in and do the same thing to make new FULL mark. This has fixed most of my leaking problems.

Already has a deep pan on it, but I have no idea if they lowered the pickup and I'm not pulling it as it doesn't leak...

Check the shifter shaft seal too. Had one leaking and it ran all around the trans pan and made me think it was the dippid sticked up tube. Didn't drive the car but one a week and it would dump a bunch of fluid so started putting it up on ramps just on the driver's side to stop it until I could get around to fixing it. Odd thing was is the car only had 50k miles on it....72 Challenger bought in 74 with 40k miles on it.

Fought that fight before myself.
If the stick tube is off / tweaked any at all once you bolt it down to the bell it creates a void at the O ring and case connection point.
If your RTV / new ring does not fix it clean it up install a new ring, fill the trans but do not bolt the tube to the bell,
I bet it will not leak.
I then put a spacer between my tube and bell to keep it solid but not bind it.
