Gear head vs a golfer

I respectfully wish to disagree....but no Red X will be given. :)

It is a selfish sport ...yes.....just like a Corvette is a selfish car. :D
You play against yourself always. I played for exercise and company on the course....never really got good enough to be a serious contender. The 19th hole was always good for me. :drinks:
I can live with that. :)

Costco did it again to me today geez. When I saw this first thing I thought of was some way to make this an engine hoist.....

The industry I was in seemed to be full of golfers... I hated how many tournaments I had to play in.. SO glad I am retired and DO NOT have to golf ever again..
People who love to golf do not understand us people who HATE to golf....

I played golf once, I lost 2 balls in a ball washer!:rofl::rofl:

I like to play. One of the reasons I live where I do besides no snow. Its the one thing the wife and I can go out and spend 4 hours out and enjoy the outdoors. Yeah we suck but its nice to have something we can do together since she has no interest in handing me a wrench.

I was a golf and bowling nut for some 30 years, golf and bowling leagues, too much hooch. It was great when my dad was alive – so many great memories playing until father time took its toll on him. I rarely beat him when he was still able, then hated beating him cuz his age caught up to him, even though he always made me pay up on our bets to da penny or da beers, lol. Later I had a back and then a neck injury (surgeries) that prevented me from playing much, recovered mostly; but being away from playing as a routine thing to do, just lost the urge as I spent more time on my old ride and other fix-it projects.

When I was younger, swore we’d move to a warmer climate someday to play more golf. Not the plan today now mostly retired. I have my shops set up to occupy my time. I get an itch sometimes to play driving by courses…then I think nah, taking the hours playing…always think of other stuff needing doing. And I don’t forget the occasions where playing golf was like being on a busy highway that used to peeve me. Da group ahead is spending 15 minutes looking for their lost balls or searching to find balls to avoid buying them and the group behind is trying to play up my ***. Shee-it, get this experience driving down the highway.

When I was young I used to bowl a lot. When I gave it up I was at 212 average. We won city league 11 years. I stopped improving and it stopped being fun. I married in to a golf family ( wife and her son ) I had played some in the past but got more serious. Worked my way to an 11 handicap then gave it up. I would rather spend my free time with my grand children. I play once or twice a year and enjoy it.

"I say pick it up, asshole, you're lucky you found the f'n thing!"

My neighbor when I was a kid, tried to get me into golf. Took me to Congressional to play a round. Apparently, you aren't supposed to use the foursome in front of you, as a target.

Huh.

He was allowed to keep his membership, but I was politely asked not to return.

Golf is a four-letter word. :D
Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden, acronym
until a Scottish queen thought it was the game of Kings
she put an end to that

------------------------------------------------------------------------
I know @MarPar (Mario) knows most of this already
it's more for those that don't

I actually got started (hooked on) in Golf (seriously like 31 y/o)
waiting for Fridays to qualify/run, at the track
needed something to do Wed. & Thurs.
boring just watching others race, to me anyway
I'm not a great spectator, especially IF I have a car there...
WE had to get there Wed. or Thurs. at the latest
to get good pit spots, not bet way out in the boonies...

Then after setting up the pits/trailer etc.
A bunch of my racing buddies would go golf
I usually just stayed at my trailer & BBQ'd or drank...

I was like some here, 'F--k that I don't golf'
I ain't gonna dress like that old fart in plaid nickers & a golf sweater
or Dockers/Polo shirt etc.
I went a couple of times, when I was a kid with my dad & granddad
it wasn't really fun, I was bored, I couldn't play
(rules about kids my age then)
I thought it was a dumb game too
I was a Baseball, Football & Track kid, into cars bikes & racing...

My perceptions (wrong) was golf & tennis,
are for total wimp sports (so I thought)

BUT; when I played with these guys 'we had a blast'
we had a ton of fun, laughing & cutting up & hitting lil' white or yellow balls
& most of them sucked, it was just wasting time...
After a couple of times going...
I went to a second hand sports store rental clubs were horrid
& bought a shitty cheap set...
I got pretty damn good, in spite of using the wrong equipment, cheap crap...

They (my golf/racing buddies) asked me, what I scored ?
I'd say; "I don't know I don't keep score"
They started keeping my score...
Sometimes we'd play for beers etc.
I was way better than their best guy was, they played for years...
That wasn't saying much really...

It morphed into me fixing & building clubs for everyone...
I figured it can't be all that tough,
I can build a racecar from the ground up
a set of clubs should be easy...
I went to a couple of schools for fitting & equipment tech. stuff

I got hooked hard...
I got hooked hard on the game too, just a year or so earlier
I wouldn't have been caught dead playing
(or so I thought) a couple of years prior

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The funny thing how perceptions are
(or how wrong you/they are)
especially about **** you know nothing about
but think you're aware of, or perceived expert on everything :poke:

some will never get it too
that's OK too

Great way to spend a few hrs in a park setting with friends
& an activity too

people that don't play it (Golf) well or often
don't or won't understand, probably ever/never will

Like people that travel & spend 10's of thousands yearly
or have a $250k Class A Motorhome & say;
the car hobby is expensive & ridiculously stupid,
why do it ?
or those that buy $25k fishing boats or $50k pleasure boats,
same deal, why do it ?
but same will criticize people that love to golf, say it's stupid
& why do it ?
or the auction are expensive & stupid,
why do it ?
or building assembling restoring planes, hell even flying them etc.
is that stupid ? it certainly isn't cheap or for everyone either

is baseball tennis soccer football bowling swimming fishing
or even all forms of racing, also stupid ?
just because some perceive it as too pricey
or just a stupid game/hobby

it's a hobby or pastime (waste of time) or activity for some
a profession for others

to each their own,
whatever blows your skirt up

some don't & won't ever get the appeal
or the comradery or the competitive nature of the game
any game, especially golf,
spending a couple of hrs getting to know someone
golf is a great way to do that, good business practice sometimes too
teaches you honesty & integrity too/also

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Obviously many here haven't ever raced for a regular
activity/sport/profession
or actually built cars from the ground up
(yeah I know some here did)

Golf is cheap in comparison, I can play hundreds of rounds
for a year's spending on my cars
it's great for stress relief, usually !!
albeit; I don't play as much anymore, (my dad's health mostly)
I still really enjoy it when I do

with $12k (for that OP's sim)
I can get a lot more golf than car parts
especially in today $$$
who in the hell thinks cars are less expensive ?

Been there done that
I had a sim in my pro-shop
we had night tourneys we had a Mexican Rest. & bar
right across from US, all kinds of people joined in, some hot ladies too
some even took up the game & bought equipment
after playing the simulator, funny how perceptions work
&
I also used it for fitting customers, you really need to hit balls
& swing like they would (replicate what they do on course)
& see results
it wasn't anywhere near $12k either, more like $5k loaded up
& a writeoff in my business's taxes

I can do a lot of car-related stuff with the $$$
(not much $$$ really, I did it for the love of the game & jobs for kids)
I made from a golf business too, I did own a pro-shop for 10+ years

---------------------------------------------------------------

Golf, Sex & Drag Racing (maybe fishing/drowning bait)
IMO are the only things you can do & be bad at it
& still, enjoy yourself...

I know what I say will never convince some
IMO that's great fewer people in front of me
holding me up or slowing me down, I can play even more
while I enjoy an outside activity, in a park-like setting, with good people
that isn't always cars/trucks/4x4's/racing

to each their own

I have nothing against golfers, heck, i even enjoyed watching a couple days of the masters. And being a bowler i completely understand the search for "new and improved" equipment, to improve your game.
But... (and please dont kill me, fellow mopar lovers!) when i see a twelve grand pricetag, i see a turnkey 632 chevy with 800 hp and a warranty. I KNOW i can build an all new aluminum head 496 for about half that.
I guess i just dont understand the dedicated golf addict.
