So I had my knee scoped about 10yrs ago
Since then I have to have my knee drained about once a year and now having other issues with same knee. Doc says I’m going to need partial knee replacement, gave me a cortisone shot and continue with lots of ibuprofen. Still no relief ! I think today they only see dollar signs ! Want to operate right away

Continual use of ibuprofen is not good either. If you doubt your doc, you can always get another opinion.

I agree in general. I have been shot with cortisone 4 times in my right shoulder along with long drawn out physical therapy. Instead of going once under the knife for minor surgery with an arthouro scope, and being done with it. On the flip side, I know a couple people who had the knee replacement and were doing fine ever since. You wonder why so many people get addicted to pain killers. I used to joke about it by suggesting to my doctors to just have me hypnotized to like pain! Good luck and may you find lasting relief soon!

Getting old sucks.. I hurt everyday and I am unable to work a full day on house projects or cars because of it....

I don't see a question, so, what's the question?

Just a conversation on what others have experienced about docs wanting to rush you to surgery

Depends on what orthopedic doctor your seeing
We’re does doctor have privileges
He has to be board certified
Who used him and what was their experience
The extent of the damage to your knee the lack of mobility
Quality of life
Only you know

I chipped the cartilage on my left femur in 1987 and finally had a knee replacement in 2018. Lots of limping, the first Doc screwed up the 87 surgery and I walked bent kneed for a year. He finally went back in the knee and almost immediately I could straighten my knee joint-that's when I knew he screwed up the year before. I started taking Celebrex around 1990 and still do. The knee is fine but it helps with the arthritis in my hands. Doctors will not do a knee replacement unless you are of a sufficient age.
I was scheduled for lower back fusion last April but I started dieting/loosing weight and it got better and better until I was pain free by May. The doctor had postponed the surgery until June due to C-19 but, I canceled. Today I seem to have the back under control and I can ride my toys with no ill effects!
I'm not pushing up daisies yet so all is well.

I have not had surgery myself, but based on knee and back surgery results from friends and with my background in medical devices as an engineer and what I hear from the field docs -

Knee replacement - can do a lot of good and I've heard nothing but good results. Beats being on meds or not walking. My neighbor just had both knees done one at a time spaced 6 months apart. He was up and walking within a week and full recovery within a few months. He told me he wondered why he waited so long. I have heard that the longer you wait to do a knee the worse it can get and more difficult the repair.

Lower back fusion - DON'T DO THIS!!! The people I know who have had this done usually come back a few years later for another fusion higher up. The fusion does not work that well. There are other ways to strengthen the surrounding area as well as relieve pain without meds. Keys to non-surgical treatment that have worked wonders for my friends and family include keeping the legs moving so things don't get tight, including walking and resistance strength training. Stretch the front of your hip flexors (top of quads) to relieve lower back tightness. Acupuncture and chinese cupping therapy work wonders and did for me as well with a bad case of sciatica nerve pain I had for over a year (3 treatments in 1 week got my pain to a zero after 6 months of no progress with HMO physio).

Hope this info helps.

I'd be asking [NO, Telling] your Dr. why the hold up on doing surgery? You've been having your knee drained every year for the past 10 and they won't do any follow up except for more draining and drugs? That's just wrong on so many levels, and yet you're the one suffering from it! I'd be looking for a 2nd or 3rd opinion and getting another doctor to get er' dun! Good Luck

Had both full knee replacements at different times, 6 to 8 weeks recovery. Partial replacement I don't know. Do the preoperative exercises!! if they tell you to. They want me to do leg raises leg where knee was to be replaced. Only could 12 raises to start was in the 60's when operation time.

Had a knee scoped 4 yrs back. The doc did a good job. It's not 100% but far better than it was. .Dbl. hernia surgery this past year turned out fine.
Same also as some of you guys,
cortisone shots here and there over the last 10 years.
My past is returning to mess with me now in my 60s. Lol.
Sucks for sure but we just have to keep moving.

Our insurance has changed so I had to go see a new doc. My old one was pretty good and he gave me a lot of options. This doc I seen only one time and after a X-ray he wants to do surgery. I’ve been taking a lot of Ibuprofen since Jan. He says keep taking it and the shot may help? Still no relief

have to wait , we are moving to AZ in 3 weeks so I will have to find a doc out there

Doctors generally have to follow a standard of care outlined by whatever board they are certified with, plus many insurance plans may not pay out on surgery until all other less invasive (cheaper) methods have been exhausted.

Good luck! The recovery from knee and hip surgeries are so much better than they used to be. Hopefully you get relief soon.

I have 2 hip replacements ( 2 years apart) from years of wear and tear in the construction industry. I couldn’t tie my shoes or put on my socks, I was like a rusty old hinge. Knees replacements are a longer rehab than hips.

All I can say is if you’re in pain daily, and can’t move like you used to, then do your homework, pick the right doc, and get it done. Any person i’ve talked about this with says they should have had it done sooner.

What do we do when our car is ailing? We work on it. How about our bodies? It gives us warning signs.

“Why do you keep hitting your head against the wall?” Because it feels so good when I stop!

Make changes in your habits to get rid of inflamation in your body. Change diet. Get rid of the wrong foods. Look up inflammatory foods and start there. It takes some time, it’s not overnight.

stretch and strengthen as in the above post.

Now you could have an injury that makes this knee pain, but these changes will help everyplace on your body besides the current bad area.

Had a hip replacement 1 year ago.Hated to have to do it.. But best thing I ever done. Went from not even able to walk to being back to normal, other than the getting old part..

Cortisone is a waste, its like novacaine for your joints.
The problem is still there you just don't feel it.
I'd rather use Jameson
