My best buddy got hit by a car, my Lab Bennie. We live way back on the hillside far from the road but Friday night the daughter and her friends decided to go for a walk just after dark to grandma's (across the road)... and Bennie followed. I always keep an eye out so I watched the flashlights as they made it to grandma's not knowing he had followed but then heard a horrific crash as a car sped by, hearing the girls screaming I knew it was Bennie. I grabbed a gun and got there asap to put him down knowing it was really bad.

When I showed up he was sitting up covered in blood and oil, instead of being a puss he hobbled to the Can Am and crawled into the seat with a little help.... he wasn't calling it quits! I honestly didn't think he'd make it, he had an inch of his front leg peeled back exposing muscle and veins, a hole in his back leg, a cut over his eye, multiple abrasions to his head, bleeding from the nose and mouth and worst a 3" hole through his chest that you could see inside of.. I don't know how he even moved. I did what I could to patch him up and stop the bleeding until the morning. Fortunately my vet made an emergency trip to fix him up, talk about an amazing women.. she went above and beyond.

After the vet the pain meds made him comfortable enough to sleep most of the day.

Day 3 he's up and about, this dog is one tough dude!

Looks like he's going to make a full recovery and hopefully the kids learned a lesson. I know he likes to chase cars, I've tried to break him of it but resorted to just keeping him away from the road, being so far from the road it's not hard. He goes where we go so if I go across the road he rides in the Can Am and goes inside with me.

Tough dog, glad there was a happy ending.
Lots of cuddles and treats due!

So glad that he's doing better . . . I totally understand why you had a bad night . . . He's your "buddy" . . .

Man I'm glad everything is getting better. One tough dog & what a great vet!

Aw, man.

That sucks.

Glad he is doing well.

That's rough. I lost a yellow lab to a car once. Had a golden retriever beat up similarly to your buddy and she recovered well, lived another 9 years after that. Good luck! He looks like he's on the right path now.

I usually don't read a thread with an ominous title, but I'm glad pooch is doing well !! There's a reason for the saying " a man's best friend" ...

I am really happy bro see him healing up. I wish him a speedy recovery. Did whoever hit him even stop???

No, it was a beater from the sound of it but I'm glad they didn't. I could easily be on the hook for auto repairs had they wanted to push the issue and it wasn't their fault.

So happy that he's on the mend. Veterinary Surgery has come a long way over the years. We thought we had lost yet another chicken to a hawk the other day. Went up in the hay loft last night to throw down a couple a bales and heard a soft chirping over in the far corner. Pulled several bales out of the way and found the poor girl stuck down next to the outside wall. She had 18 eggs sitting on top of a bale stuffed into the rafter tails. She apparently hopped down and disturbed a bale that shifted, and it trapped her in a 10"x 15" x 9" space. She had eaten two eggs to stay alive. Poor thing. She's back out and foraging with the other hens today. None the worse for her experience.

Oh wow! I can't imagine what you all were going through. I'm glad he's pulling through.

Poor boy, I would have felt terrible if my dog got hit by a car. Glad to hear he's doing well! Keep an eye on him and give him plenty of treats! 440'

As everyone has said, glad he's recovering, no questions dogs are tough.. Give that boy lots of love & treats!! And many thanks to your vet...

With luck this might convince him chasing cars isn't a good idea....

Tough old buzzard. What a great dog, vet and owner. You're a good man, sir.

Glad to hear he is on the mend. Reminds me of when Sasha, the Rotty we had in the late 90's, got hit. Her left thigh was shattered. It took 3 surgeries to save it. One thing I learned is don't put any flea meds on/in them when they are recovering. It can cause the bone healing to not happen.
