Pretty sure I've figured these plastic clips out but wanted to verify. At first I thought the clips were installed on the trim, set on the car and the peg inserted underneath to lock them in place. But after looking at them some more it looks like they are set on the fender, the plastic peg inserted from the top and then the trim snapped down over the top of them. Correct?

Another curiosity on the trim. My trim is pretty fresh looking topside and underneath but of very light gauge aluminum. I have a couple spare pieces I picked up that are well use and in need of restoration and they seem of heavier gauge, stiffer aluminum. The ones on the car are so thin there are a couple small splits along the top edge where the metal was stretched too thin during their forming. Was there a reproduction of this trim available at one time years ago, which might be what's on the car? If not, then I guess there might have been some different suppliers. But it looks too fresh to be original and no sign of having been re-anodized.

Put the clip on the fender, insert the pin from the top then put the trim on over it.

You are correct on the clips.
The trim that I have seen throughout the years has been pretty durable. If yours has been stripped, straightened, and polished without reanodizeing then it may be quite thin and tend to split. Reanodizeing tends to make them even thinner as the process uses some of the surface aluminum.

Pretty sure it’s still anodized (or re-anodized). I restored all the aluminum trim on a 63 Ford Galaxie for a friend a couple years ago so I got real familiar with straightening, stripping and polishing aluminum and what it looks like in a polished state. Also most restored trim will have tell-tell marks on the underside from partial stripping and tapping out dings and this stuff is really clean underneath - factory fresh. If not for the splits on the front fender pieces and that a PO installed the left rear fender piece with some spring clips that look like door panel clips, it would be pretty nice. Maybe a special run of some NOS produced late in the model year for dealer and body shop shelves.

Then I'm not sure what to say, other than it may have not needed straightening and was just sanded, polished and reanodized. You sort of know what you are looking at and pictures probably won't tell.

Yes, that’s possible and the thin metal and splits would seem to fit that theory. Just an oddity and I was curious if there might have been some early repro stuff made.

I have never seen it reproduced, but a later production run could be a possibility and only sold as replacement pieces. Just another theory.

I tried an little Mother’s polish on it and the cloth stayed clean so it’s definitely anodized and has that anodized look versus buffed out aluminum which looks almost chrome like. So it probably has been stripped and re-anodized. Must have been a really straight set of trim as I don’t see any signs of past repairs on the backside. I epoxied up the splits and if that holds, the splits are not noticeable except at nose length. Massaged a few minute dings out and straightened the edges so it will serve for duty for awhile. I would be nice if OER would reproduce it in billet, extruded form like their reproduction hood lip trim.

You got the trim off the guy I sent you to correct?

If so, you got some of the original trim off my car.

he put all but one piece on mine is NOS

And as far as I know, the trim has never been reproduced

Yes Bill, I got it. I intend to repair and refinish it some time but for immediate purposes I epoxied the split ends tight on the ones on it now since the splits were so fine. Bob is helping me with a few other pieces of misc trim too.

Good deal,

We have been friends for a very long time.
He will treat you right on anything.

Yes, just communicating by email and his putting up with the postal service misplacing mail/ checks, he seems like a real nice guy. Certainly been reasonable on prices too. When I got the front fender trim from him I didn’t think he was asking for enough money to cover shipping and sent a little extra. He replied later I was right. Same thing next time but he said he had a few dollars left from before so he was OK.

Considering how thin this trim I have is, I’m considering seeing if he has some door and rear fender trim left and just strip and polish it all out for the future. I spent a year straightening, stripping, sanding and polishing all the int/ext aluminum trim, grill, tail panel, etc on a friends 427 Galaxie a couple years ago (and it was a lot) and while it’s tedious it can be made to look really amazing.

He has some NOS stuff set aside for me next time i go back for a visit. ( it all can fit in a suitcase )

He did say the issue with shipping the quarter trim is length makes it have to go truck freight which is stupid money

I shipped some UPS in a 4" PVC or plastic tube recently. Best I remember less than 12 bucks.

I shipped a 66 Satellite quarter trim in a 3" PVC tube two months ago through UPS, just has an extra handling fee due to the length. No issues, arrived in three days.
