So I thought I was making progress...

a slant isn't nearly as messy , I've always done them running. as for a V-8 , i tried it once, not for me , I've always done them engine off instead of draining and blowing oil all over the place . I've never had an issue doing them cold.
 
A hydraulic cam wont know if its got .020" preload or .080" preload at idle. Neither number would change any noise, as there is no slack in the valve train. Now if the cam ramp or other issue is causing the noise no amount of adjustment is going to cure it. Hydraulic cam is a set it and forget it. If the adjustment changes you have an issue. Slant six cams up until the last were mechanical. How did you adjust them running? who here has adjusted valves lately? Or are we just talking? I'm sorry to sound like a jerk. But there is some real BS being spread here.

Uh, I've done it lately. Like yesterday. Given the fact that the adjustment nuts are out on the end of the rockers, where they move THE MOST, it pretty much sucks. In my defense, I wasn't aware that
the cam and lifters had been changed to hydraulics.
BTW...if you change from solid lifters to hydraulics in a 273, can you use the same pushrods? The ones in this motor are the cup and ball type.
 
Because you actually get feedback from the lifter, it's not based on feel and what you think/expect the lifter to do...

I just set lash on a running slant not too long ago, very simple process, and not too messy. I put 273 adjustable rockers and pushrods on my 360 because the hydraulic summit cam I put in has a smaller base circle than the factory cam resulting in some annoying clattering. the adjustables took up the slack and it sounds much better.

Ball/cup is fine. The important thing is that you don't have too much adjuster protruding out of the bottom of the rocker arm when you get to the the desired preload. Verify the lifter type...
 
pushrods do not interchange
also early and late differences- lifter cup height and cup/ ball diameter
cup adjusters and ball and ball pushrods if you are buying new
eliminates the adjuster screwed out too far problems (break)
 
Well I have a few tools used to adjust hydraulic lifters running. Clips for each rocker that deflect oil out of oil hole. Some oil does flip up-off rocker end. But never adj rockers running. Taaaathh wooiolddd bbbeeeee iiiimmmmppppoossssibbbllleeeeee.
 
“I'd love to see a video of someone adjusting rockers with the adjuster at the end of the rocker bouncing up and down with a wrench attached, oil flying all over. I call BS. Show us a video. No way I would ever adjust them running. Maybe a stud rocker on a Chevy. Even then its messy. During race season I adjust valves weekly. Simple procedure. First realize that your valve order is E I I E E I I E. Now get a push button switch and attach it to the yellow wire location at the starter solenoid. Attach the other end to battery plus. Start at the front on the left side and work your way back. When the intake starts to close set the exhaust. When the exhaust starts to open set the intake. A little one way or the other won't matter as far as where the open/close valve is. To adjust: Loosen the adjuster until you can spin the pushrod with your fingers easily. Tighten until you feel very slight resistance. You can go back and forth with the adjuster until you get a good feel for it. Then tighten 1/2 -3/4 turn. You will now have .020"-.030" preload. If your rockers gets swapped to a lock nut adjuster ( which I highly recommend) tighten the lock nut. I've done it so many times that I don't even go front to back. Just watch the rockers and find the next one opening or closing. Takes me less than 15 minutes start to finish.”


Does the engine have to be warmed up or can the rockers be adjusted successfully when the engine is cold using this method?

You can do the hydraulic lifters cold.
