I use Gibbs DRIVEN oils.

Don't use Mobil 15W 50 that without cam protection additives. Better to not use it at all.

I've used mobil 1 15-50 ever since I was 15 in any old car !
I've never had anything bad happen my motors ran great internals were spotless!
I ran it in my 440 4 speed charger and it was fantastic!
But that's me . I grew up around it it's an amazing oil but it's not cheap
15-50 isn't for new motors they want 5-20 at the most you would murder a new style engine with this Stuff!

Rotella is a bad *** oil also ! Used it alot in my big rigs and equipment over the years! But we're talking about low rpm vs high rpm

Don't use Mobil 15W 50 that without cam protection additives. Better to not use it at all.
According to Mobil1, the 15W-50 has 1300ppm of zinc made for flat tappet applications

Rotella 15w-40

Diesel oil is not a very good oil to run in high performance cars, I use to run it until I came across an article written by a retired Engineer. This guy goes by 540Rat and his extensive testing of all brands of oils shows which oils have better wear resistance than others. You will be shocked at what brands did not fair very well. If you have time his web site is, 540ratblog.wordpress.com when it opens look for 540 rat-tech facts. It's long but worth the reading. Hear is one thing he has to say about Shell Rotella.
The PSI rating is how well the oil resist wear, anything over 90 psi is excellent, Mobil 1, Valvoline, Amzoil and a couple of others all rate very high

78. 5W30 Shell Rotella Gas Truck motor oil, synthetic, API SN Plus, GM dexos1-Gen 2 = 96,269 psi
zinc = TBD
phos = TBD
moly = TBD
This oil was tested Spring 2019.
Immediately below is a comparison of how the previously tested Traditional Heavy Duty Shell Rotella T Diesel oils compared to this Gas Truck oil:

15W40 “NEW” SHELL ROTELLA T Diesel Oil conventional, API CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CH-4, CF-4,CF/SM = 72,022 psi

15W40 “OLD” SHELL ROTELLA T Diesel Oil conventional, API CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4,CG-4,CF-4,CF,SL, SJ, SH = 71,214 psi

As you can see, the new Shell Rotella Gas Truck oil provides MUCH HIGHER wear protection capability than the Shell Rotella T Diesel oils tested previously. This is further proof that Traditional Heavy Duty Diesel oil is NOT a good choice for High Performance gas engines.

I use 15-50 from about May through October-ish, then switch to 10-40 during the cooler months but I have the bearing clearance for it. I wouldn't use a 50 viscosity unless it gets hot where you are or you run looser clearances.
I use Driven/Joe Gibbs oil...worth the extra few bucks IMO.

I use Rotella in my Kenworth. :thumbsup:
My old 86 lived on it also.:thumbsup:

I read his stuff years ago. Some people praise him, others take pot shits at him. Seems like he does alot of homework if you ask me.

540 rat, is always updating his site with all the newer ( lighter ) oils that are coming out on the market and it's surprising that some companies that make these specialty oils for the older cars are not really that good in respect to wear resistance, yes they have zinc in them but to much zinc is not good either. It takes more than just zinc to make oil wear resistant. Mobil 1, Valvoline, and Amzoil all seem to have very good wear ratings along with a few others. Some specialty brands do not fair very well in the wear resistance but after adding a additive the wear resistance goes way up so why spend big bucks on oil then have to add an additive, just buy the highly rated oils. I have been using Valvoline 10/40 high mileage oil or Amzoil 10 W 40 which both are rated extremely high for wear resistance and I have never had a problem.

It had a 444 Cummins the trans was a 13 with. 24.5 rubber and 3:73 s .
Had a bigger button in the pump :steering:

Penn Grade 1 SAE 50 or 20w50 when it still a bit cooler out. That and a Moroso oil filter raised my idle oil pressure by 5psi compared to the same weight Amsoil product.

I use either gibbs driven or valvoline vr1, conventional only 10w30. This is with a solid lifter cam. If you use the vr1 you have to change fairly often as it's not intended for extended drain intervals. But the zddp content is spot on. I wouldn't put mobil one in any car with flat tappets.

Anyone running Mobile 1 15 W 50 in their 440's

I run Mobil 1 15W-50 in my 470 low-deck, it's one of the few synthetics that is recommended for flat-tappet applications and has the correct additive package (more is not necessarily better). Synthetic is typically superior to conventional in maintaining its shear strength. Good base stock, with the proper additive package is what we should look for. If my pockets were deeper, Amsoil, without question.

Just something else for us to think about. Many people still believe a deep sump, 7-quart oil pan, is designed to run 7-quarts of oil. In most cases, all that's achieved is oil aeration and windage losses. In reality, it's best to run 5 to 6-quarts of oil to reduce windage (keeping the oil farther from the crank) and in turn, will reduce oil aeration. I say this because many of us have aftermarket pans and have ran, typically around 7-quarts of oil due to the increased rated capacity, and then blamed the oil when we wiped camshaft lobes or engine failure occurred.
