I have a 66 Charger that has had electronic ignition installed at some time before I got the car. I understand that installing this can interfere with operation of the tach. My tach seems to be erratic, one stop light 200 rpm, the next 700, 50 mph 1000 rpm. It has an external control box or what looks like it and no brand markings. My question, would installation of a petronix ignition that is all internal to the distributor make the tach more accurate and operate properly> Has anyone done this. I have just installed the petronix on a 73 Triumph and am quite happy with it.
TIA Ted

I'd like to know this too as I would like to install a Petronix ignition.

Damn, Thought I had an answer. Guess we'll both find out. If we don't get an answer I'm gonna try it.

If the electronic part is the mopar style ECU it should work just fine.
I used my factory tach for 25 years or more and it was always accurate.
I'm msd street fire now with atomic efi. But I'd like to get the factory tach functional again sometime.

I have used a Petronix ignition on my 66 Barracuda with factory Tac for 15 years and the tac works fine.

Mines a 66 w/ 383. I installed Mopar electronic ignition in 2010, also installed electronic type regulator as instructed. All worked perfectly, no issues. No problems or any effect on tach function. There are capacitors on the circuit board in the tach sender. Worth checking these or having them checked. Capacitors don't necessarily last forever.

Thanks for all the responses. I am into an area where I have little knowledge other than plug and play. I will first look to see if I can figure out what I presently have and probably then install a petronix system. Simple and less parts. I like that. Whoever had this car previously did a good job but there are some areas in need.
Thanks
Ted

The answer comes from Real Time Engineering
They make kits to replace the tach board in either the 66 can or the 67 gauge
The new boards will take the feed from most modern electronic ignition
I used one in My 66 and it takes the feed from the msd ignition
both my gauge and my tach read
also the new boards are adjustable
