Joel, what gun do you need for that undercoating from Resto Rick? Probably won't ship it to Canuck land anyhow..
Decided to tear into the steering column next. Wouldn't surprise me if this was the first time its been out of the car. Didn't look to bad on the outside because I spray bombed some paint on it 16 years ago. A cobbled up tool I made several years ago to push the shaft out from the bearing. Interest factory mark on the shaft. Looks to not have moved through all these years. Shot of the bottom end showing the surface rust (did I ever mention how much I hate rust?)
The outer tube was just a tad bent. Not really noticeable, but was off. Got that straightened out before blasting. Blasted everything clean. I sprayed every part with either grey or black epoxy primer and then the final color. I used 2 different rattle can engine paints for the grey. A semi gloss PPG single stage for the flanges and a custom PPG mix I had made for the column tube, collars, and dash frame. It has a flattening agent and texture in it. And everything painted.
I had bought new bearings, but after cleaning up the old lower found out that is was really nice inside. Decided to regrease that one instead of the repop. The old bearings are so much better quality than the new ones imo. Putting everything back together. Been using these steering coupler clips and really like them. Saves a lot of messing around if you can trial fit them before it is bolted in the car. And yes I know the rubber seal should be black and not toilet plunger material (according to RC), but I had a couple of these and I can live with it.
The reason for making sure the outer tube is nice and straight comes to light when installing these clips. Found an original turn signal switch. 2947801, this is the last superseded version that was made by Chrysler until 2008. It replaces the original 2857241 which was in production until 1992 I believe. And all buttoned up.....

The bearing in my steering column is now starting to act up a bit. It was fine when I restored the car 6 years ago, but now seems like it is getting grumpy. (Or maybe I screwed something up when pulling and replacing the engine three times lately!) At any rate, I guess a winter project for me will be to pull the column and fix it up. I like your cobbled up tool to push the shaft - I may need to copy that!

I actually bought one of the $90 reproduction bearings. They have less than 1/2 the number of bb's riding in the race and they are smaller as well as surrounded by a plastic material instead of free floating. It was real stiff originally. I got it loosened up if held inverted. But when I tipped it the way it would set in the car it was still rough. That's when I cleaned up my old one and saw the differences. I'm sending the repo one back.

I have read that guys are using this bearing with good results. Only issue is the way it is held in place. Set screw lock it to the inner shaft instead of the 2 small bolts and index tab on an original style.

Nice work on the column. I have yet to see a column with those clips on it. I know they're in the assembly drawing ('68 at least), but have yet to see a column with them actually on it.
Me either honestly. When a member here reproduced a batch I got enough for all my cars from him. They snap in pretty solid, so can't imagine they would fall out by themselves. They probably didn't get put on many cars originally. Maybe it was planned but never followed through with?

Got the body over to my buddy a month ago. Doors, fenders, hood, and decklid are sanded down and in primer. Old paint is sanded off the body and getting close to primer. Nice to finally be getting things moving along again.
Nothing like the smell of fresh paint. Doing the dance in the paint booth. LOL.
