Cylinder head and cam question

Respect for doing all that with the engine still inside the car.
I did a similar job on the engine but pulled it out for painting and repairing threaded holes for the exhaust manifold bolts.
Mine is a 440 with headers though, so even more limited space wise.

Which heads did you end up using, the original ones or the spare set?

I had the old head out to pull an exhaust stud, so I put a bit of yellow paint in the flaw under the seat. I then lapped in the valve just to see how much seat there actually was.....not much, I'm surprised that it sealed.

Got the deck surfaces cleaned up and was going to put the heads on, but I had to change out one long exhaust stud, and of course the one in the new head snapped off flush. That wasted the rest of my afternoon.

Heads are back in place. Not torqued down yet. My back said that was enough.

Got the head bolts and factory heat shield and wire loom cleaned up and ready.

Sorry I missed this thread before.

Nice job on doing some upgrades and improvements. I'm sure you will notice a smoother, better performing engine. AND it will look a lot better too!

Exhaust manifolds cleaned and installed. Dropped one manifold nut into the headpipe on one side and the other side is no longer lining up, so I guess I will have to pull them off and readjust.

The headpipe not lining up makes no sense unless you did something else with the exhaust?

Doesn't make sense to me either. I'll have to have a better look at it. Right now when I try and line up the flange to the manifold the pipe is resting up against the torsion bar. The car has a custom bent exhaust. I'm thinking it was under tension originally.

Maybe it never fit correctly? That seems plausible

Problem solved. I rigged up my flexible grabber with two rare earth magnets taped to the end and was able to fish out the manifold nut.

The drivers side was not lining up. I figured I would remove the muffler clamp and twist it a bit, only to find out it had been tack welded. Once I pried it over enough to get the bolts started, it cleared the torsion bar, so all is good.

Passenger side went in easily. Everything underneath is now back in place.

Not much progress. A lot of detail stuff and some test fitting. Put the intake on to check alignment

No progress for a few weeks. Catching up with spring yard work. Messed my back up yesterday so all I got done today was to paint all the engine brackets and finish the plastidip on the A/C line holdowns.

My back is still messed up so just cleaned and painted the valve covers.

Got the valve train cleaned up and ready to go back on. Here is a before picture for comparison.
