well i will be getting a 1969 GTX that has been setting 15+ years from an estate. they are kind enough to let me get it running so i can drive it home. now for the bad news and questions after sifening 15 gal. of fuel out, i looked in the tank solid rust. and the fuel filler neck was not secured to the body, only held in by the filler neck seal. Is there a bracket missing or how does it secure to the body? since i need a new tank, sender, possibly filler neck . how good are they from year one? next issue were is the proper location of the fuel filter? between the fuel pump and vapor separator?

There is a L shaped bracket that is clamped to the fuel filler neck, which attaches with a bolt to the body behind the license plate. There is a fuel filter sock on the end of the sending unit, from there the line goes to the vapor separator and up to the carb.

would you know if the vapor separator can be cleaned out (back flushed). there was a lot of trash in the carb when i rebuilt it. as for the bracket i hope i can find it, theirs car parts in every room of the house

Easy way to get it home so you can then work on it there, get an outboard tank with enough hose you can set it on the passenger floor, hose out the vent window and into the engine compartment. Take the inlet hose off the fuel pump, clamp it and hook up the outboard tank. Worry about the crusty tank when you get it home.

Beautiful GTX! Can't wait to see more pictures.

The gas can idea is the best way to get it running. Buckle it in so it doesn't spill. The original tank is a clog waiting to happen.

the tank is dropped thats how i found out about the rust. what ever was in the fuel eat the float. i will be flushing out the fuel lines.before starting it. does anyone make a fuel tank kit? the only one i have found is threw year one. I know the late owner bought a lot of parts threw them when he was restoring the car in the 80's early 90's.

drive it home? that's crazy........ call a flatbed

me and my big mouth told then i would be able to get it running and drive it home. there reply was take all the time you need.

Gas can inside the car? Not a safe thing to do in case of an accident.

Put the secondary tank in the trunk and hook it to the factory fuel line. Go through the sending wire hole in the trunk with the fuel line.

If it had a vapor separator From factory then no other filter in the system.

I don’t know of a way to clean out a separator, the lines are not at the surface they extend up into the can.

I’d clean out the carb, remove separator and install a real filter, add a tank inside the trunk. Drive it home and then put in the new tank.

The last couple of tanks and senders that I bought were through RockAuto. If I remember right they were Spectra tanks. You can fab the bracket and tack it to your filler neck. Don’t forget the pad that goes between the tank and the trunk floor. Good luck on your project, post a few pictures when you can.

You can deal with the separator later. Just run a normal 2 line filter for now and plug the return. If the tank is already out buy a tank, sender, filler grommet and install it. Blow the lines out. You can try to wash the vapor separator out. If it blows through with no resistance it should work. Or as I said just use a cheap 2 line to get it home.

From the limited pics, it looks like you got a very nice car. Bottom is painted, does that mean it was on a rotisserie? And a Hurst shifter sticking up between those seats .
yep and yep was told by the owner years ago matching numbers 440 4 speed with the dana still under it.

Rock Auto for the tank, order new body fuel line. Install them where the car is stored it isn't a big deal, just the car has to be raised up to wrestle the new body fuel line in. Drive it home. Don't even think about re-using the old fuel line even if it's still there. It just isn't worth the risk. Oh, you'll need a new sending unit and sock too and some good quality fuel hose and a few clamps. Don't expect the new sending unit to read very well.

update: ordered the parts from layson's since they had almost everything in stock and shipped yesterday. but i should have ordered a gas cap also .i thought a local auto parts store would have it but most of them dont even list one on there web site. i did find it listed on NAPA but it shows 2 different caps, vented and one non vented. does anyone know which one i need? the tank only has the 2 vent lines and the normal fuel and return line.
