I think what bugs me most on this van is the windshield looks goofy next to the chopped windows! It needs a chop or a cover to hide the glass !

And to think a Rat Rod idea starts from something like this is cool!

It's a custom that not finished weather intentional or on purpose, it's like the Munster mobile without paint and interior. I think they're kinda cool in their own right myself!!

I've seen many well done rat rods that I'd love to own and then there's the ones like this.. all over the place with no real plan.

"Rat rods" come in many forms, unfortunately the looseness of the term allows complete death traps to sit alongside really superbly built near works of art. The really good cars have one foot in the "vintage" camp and another in the rat rod camp; meaning that the builder used period parts along with modern tech to produce a vehicle that looks unfinished or weathered but in reality is well thought out and constructed. The other side of this is the people who just weld junk together and proudly proclaim "rat rod"; unfortunately these same people think their POS is worth as much as the other one...

Isn't that the "M.O" when building one?

We use to have one of these guys building crap in the industrial complex where I have a shop.... Absolute death trap vehicles... And yet some idiot would always come along & give him stupid money for his junk... He sold a 50 Crosley body on a stretched Metro frame for $45K, this thing only had rear drum brakes, the front end was a econoline straight axle welded solid to the frame... The steering linkage was galvanized pipe that he'd stick welded together.... On the one side I thought he was an idiot for building/driving such a POS... On the other side he found some idiot to give him more for that thing than I've ever sold a good solid muscle car for......

Guess that's open to interpretation. I always saw the whole movement as being about building something cool and functional out of what you could round up while leaving the patina in tact (cheap hot rods). I guess that's part of the beauty in it but tasteful is the key word for me.

I think the movement did start with good intentions and because it was "new" it became interesting which in turn brought some money into it. Unfortunately wherever there is money there are A holes and they came out in droves. Very quickly any car that was rusty and had crappy paint was called a "rat rod" and the stupid people with money thought it was cool and an investment. Many of the cars that are called rat rods are in fact death traps; bad brakes, super sketchy fuel systems, minimal electrics, etc. but some people just love them.

I feel that junk is junk regardless of what it is called. I don't have to like the ascetics of the end result but if it is built well I can respect that. To me, there is a lot of draw towards one of these types of vehicles because you don't have to worry about the paint and the build it typically pretty straightforward. To be honest, I am much more interested in a well executed hot rod or rat rod than I am a restored car.

That one bug has a Chevy small block, but no cage. It doesn't look to have much suspension in the rear. What could go wrong? I like the Fiat gasser look in front though.
