Anyone have suggestions on how to remove the one-way metal clips that hold the 3 horn buttons on the steering wheel without breaking the plastic posts? Also does anyone make replacement covers for the horn buttons? Thanks

Patience, patience, patience is key.

Okay here we go. Heat gun or a blow dryer and WD40. Start with one spoke and heat up the area by the red arrow in attached pic. I do this to warm up the plastic to make it less brittle. Then take a small screw driver or small prying tool and slowly pry up the tip of the cover. Lift it up high enough to spray some WD40 in there. WD40 with a snorkel straw is best. Let it penetrate for a bit then continue to pry and it should release. First spoke is the hardest.

So what you have is the heat for the plastic and the WD40 is for the metal. It still may fail you but you really up the odds doing it this way rather than diving with a screwdriver and going at it.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice. I may just make due with what I got vs risking to break them. Wish I had a spare to practice on.

I imagine that the procedure is the same for a 73 Roadrunner?. Mine is my first car, I got it when I was 16 in 1980. It is very nice and I'm really worried I'm gonna screw it up! I have to replace the ignition switch wiring harness and I really don't know the procedure. If anyone has any pictures of what it is that I am actually detaching, or video of the process I would be very grateful!

It takes patience to get the center piece off, but once you are in there, the next problem is getting all three horn button contacts out. That's tricky, and they have the one way nuts that hold them on by plastic posts that can easily break. However, if you get that far, and can get the contacts out, here is a write up on how to repair the contacts, because usually the foam between the metal is disintegrated and causes the rubber contact pads(with metal impregnated in them) to no longer make contact.
