I realized by looking at pics of my 66 Coronet before I bought it, that the antenna must have snapped off/out/something during the open air delivery of the car. Where to get a replacement antenna, and is this something that can be replaced without taking off the fender?

The best place to start is a wanted thread here regardless whether you are looking for a used part or repop.

You can replace it without removing the fender. You will need to remove the splashshield in the wheel arch to access the antenna base locking nut though.

The antenna locknut is accessed from the top. It helps to have the correct spanner tool for the nut. Spray some penetrant around the nut right now and do it every other day until the new one arrives.

The antenna comes in and out through the door jamb.

You will have to remove the sill plate and kick panel to get the cable out.

I’ve never had to remove the splash shield for this task.

I may well be talking ****....
I'm sure I had to have access to the underside of the fender as I needed a washer under there larger than the hole in the fender. My antenna is probably not factory though.

Vans Auto advertises them, maybe cheaper someplace else? Mega Parts? Not Mine!

That's about what I paid for my new one on my 67. Original lasted 53 yrs going through who knows how many old and modern car washes. New one broke off on 1st car wash. I got a bit newer, I think '68 that has a removable antenna shaft, had to enlarge the hole in my fender just a bit and the installed it the same way.

66 Sat is correct. The rear splash shield that 'protects' the door jam, etc. from debris has to come out and you'll gain access to the antenna. My '66 Belvedere was heavily undercoated so getting the splash shield out was a little tricky as the bolts were 'hidden' by the undercoating. There should be 3 bolts with large fender washers going down the right side of the shield, a body bolt at the top and one attaching the shield to the fender at the bottom. Hope this helps.

I just don’t see why that splash shield needs to come out. There is nothing under there to work on. I’ve changed many antennas without removing that splash shield. You can to!

Remove the top nut and bezel, antenna goes down through the door jamb and into your hand, cable grommet pushes out of kick panel and cable comes out with it.

What is under the fender that you need access to?

To add to R413, before you pull the cable up, loop some stiff wire around it at the top near the antenna base. Then cut the wire just above it and pull the antenna wire down through the kick panel area. Then you can attach the stiff wire to the new antenna wire and pull it down into the car.

My '63 has the removable shields and did this to replace my antenna; but I installed a power antenna and those can be had easy and for cheap. It goes up and down with the on/off power for my stereo. I like having it retracted when not using the stereo.

Took a while for me to get back around to it, but bought one from ebay and followed the various instructions in this thread. Ta-Da! Thanks folks!

The difference in opinions may be due to different antennas. This is what I had to work with when I removed mine. Note the half moon shaped bracket on the bottom side of the antenna. That bracket braces the antenna against the underside of the fender and allows the nut on top to tighten. I could not access that bracket from the door jam so I had to remove the splash shield. Might just be a different application from what others have or there was an easier way that I wasn’t aware of. In any case, glad you got it taken care of. BTW, I removed mine, filled in the hole in the fender and added an under dash antenna. Only the original AM radio so the new antenna works fine.

Yes that is a factory antenna with that half moon piece. Is sits on the antenna and it pivots to make the mast level. It can’t fall off. It’s no big deal to get the antenna in the car and straight from the top side.

I see what you're talking about. Funny I never thought of that. Makes me wonder what else I haven't thought of.
Thanks for the tip.
