Being this the most notorious Mexican celebration in the US let me say this, NO!!! we do not celebrate our independence from Spain that day is September 16, today, we celebrate the commemoration of the battle of Puebla, we win the battle, lost the war, the french impose us an emperor and we sent him back dead in a small coffin along with his crazy wife, those who have been in Mexico city may remember our most famous avenue, paseo de la reforma, this avenue is a legacy from this period was ordered by Carlota of Hasburg to see his husband leave from the castle of chapultepec during the empire.

Cinco De Mayo is, I think celebrated more in the US than anything else.
And most people dont know what it's about and I dont know why we even celebrate it.

Sad actually that it is more of a silly fest by the Yankees here in the States. Having studied History with a concentration in the Western experience, Mexico's History is quite similar to ours. When the French false Emperor was brought in he was actually a Hapsburg member of that Royal Namesake. The French did bring with them, the fine arts of Pastry baking and Confections which the local Mexican population warmly embraced. Today, Mexico has some of the best sweets and Pastry having improved on the original French examples. And yes the Battle of Puebla was a great victory for Mexico City but sadly as you stated wouldn't achieve independence until September. Thanks for a local's insight to this History...cr8crshr/Bill:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::usflag::usflag::usflag:

I’m out of town, hope the East side of San Jose is still standing. May be still smoldering.

I happen to like a good silly fest.

...and it's 15 plus 6 exclusivity prior, so there is a case for 21.

Is too bad that we are not neighbors, I love to have a conversation with you about history I like military history too, in fact
I was waiting for your reply sir, France invade Mexico twice the second intervention origin the battle of Puebla, the first intervention was Due the ridiculous pretext of collect a debt for a french baker this episode was called the war of the cakes, the second was because Juarez our president refuse to pay the external debt, but it was more because Napoleon the third want to expand the french empire to America, imposing a puppet emperor Maximilian of Hasburg, the Mexican independence was consumated September 21 1821, that battle of Puebla was may the fifth 1862.

Happy Cinco deMayo

my BIL Taco/Frank's & my Grammies birthdays (both rest in peace)

I am an American of Mexican descent. Been to Mexico on the 5th. Not celebrated, I believe it was commercialized to drink the awful Corona Beer. Anyways that is just my opinion.
