727 tailshaft loose

Maybe a durabond coated bushing rp6189t. I have never tried one. On paper it should be .002 tighter than the brass one I have here. Those are for minimum specs, they do not give a maximum. Thinking of trying that and a hard chrome yoke.

Is the tail shaft mounted on the transmission yet?

I just want to add the ford c-6 uses this same bushing, some ford guys are complaining about the loose fit
As best as I can find ford wants .005 clearance. At the joint that would be quite a bit.

Do not be lazy and do not be stupid. Measure and tell us how much the yoke pulls out. You have tried different yokes, bushings and tail housings. You missed it sorry.
By the way, I did measure it. It's pulled out one inch from bottomed out. Which is what a driveshaft builder said it's supposed to be. It took me a lot of thinking and effort since, ya know I'm stupid and lazy.

.005 seems like a lot. All I know is my 66 coronet yoke is much tighter in the trans and that car is smooth at all speeds.

If it’s installed then .004 clearance is a little loose. I think probably around .002 to .003 is about what you should expect normally. Sometimes in driving a bushing in, the end can get mushroomed slightly and the yoke can almost be an interference fit and be tight initially or in extreme cases require reaming before the yoke will slide in. Can you mic or caliper the yoke diameter and post it?

Have you actually trial-assembled the tail housing to the transmission and tried installing the yoke? Seems I remember mine feeling a bit loose until I assembled everything and then the yoke seemed to be snug with no play once slid over the splined output shaft.
I installed the smallest bushing I have, measured with a dail bore gauge, into the tailshaft housing which is off the car. It's a Teflon coated one. It has .011 of clearance with the original yoke. That seems like a lot to me. My initial measurement of 4 thou was actually 14 thou using the Alto bushing. I didn't realize my gauge spun around once. Idk, I'll put it together with the tightest bushing I have and see if there's any change in vibes. I have 2 more 727s. One seems a lot tighter when I stick the yoke in it. I may just take that tail housing off and try it. If nothing changes, I'll have to look elsewhere for this vibration problem. I may also get a nice aluminum drive shaft. They're only 400-500.00. Plug and play made to your measurements. If it still vibrates, I'll do a 6 grand burnout till it explodes and park it for another 9 yrs.

That’s a lot, especially for a new bushing and yoke. Something is wrong with one or the other or both. Can you post the measured dia of the yoke and inside dia of the bushing?

Clearance with new bushing around .003.
Just measured both. Yoke is 1.681 bushing installed is 1.690. Give or take a thou because it's not consistently round.
There's a nice amount of press fit when installing the bushing.

Any chance your getting a ford bushing? Any chance you have a ford yoke? Ya it's off the wall.:screwy:

Ford bushing is the same. I have 3 different bushings. The yoke is the same size as the new one on my driveshaft and another 727 yoke I have.

So I have another tranny from a 77 Monaco. I pulled the tailshaft housing and measured the bushing. It's a used one with unknown miles and the bushing was several thou tighter than a new installed bushing in the trans I rebuilt. It also has the big rubber mounted cast iron weight. So I installed that. The vibration from 35 to 45 is definitely reduced and it's very smooth at 70mph up. I know a weird guy that's a very good machinest, he makes all kinds of **** for obsolete old stuff. I'm going to see if he'll make a bushing and hone it to fit my yoke. I can almost guarantee my vibes will be gone if he can do this.
