I have a 71 B-body AM/FM Radio that has the cassette pigtail out back. #3501014
Does anyone know if this radio can be operated without having the cassette deck
connected to it?

yes... it requires a plug to jump out the in and outs into the din connector. When radio was equipped without the cassette, these radios got from factory the plug connected

As Nacho said you don't need the cassette player. If you get the cable you can use it to add an auxiliary input instead of the cassette deck.

If you got missed that plug, it can be made with any DIN 7 female plug around and sold the plug terminals with jumper wires inside

You can even make a Plug adaptor with a DIN female plug, a piece of 4 conductors wire and a NC 1/8" stereo jack which will allow to insert any input source into the Radio. I in fact made an adaptor ( but included also a 12 volts source using a Cigar ligher socket spliced into the same DIN plug pigtail which provides power too )

If I'm able to come up with a DIN 7 female plug, then which pins will need to be jumper to get the radio to play?
I see that the wiring diagram shows that the pins are numbered 1 to 7.

Looking at a bridging plug with a magnifier [old eyes] pins 1o-3i L/channel & 4o-5i R/channel.
o=out/i=in

Using the audio ground and the left/right you could hook up different audio inputs like the cell phone headphone connection.

Can this be done by shorting pins together
Or do you need a magnifier ? i too would like to see if my radio works !

It sound like you are saying that you have one of those factory "bridging plugs" that were used when the cassette deck is not there, and that pins 1 and 3 are jumped and also pins 4 and 5 are jumped.
Am I understanding you correctly?

If you look at diagram will find what pins to jump out into the female DIN plug to get in and outs linked to make the radio work without the factory jumper plug.

need to say, the diagram shows in and out from the cassette player point of view... so the input is input to cassette player unit and output is output FROM cassette player. This is because the cassette player gets the audio selector switch ( Radio or cassette ) into the unit

Or as mentioned, make the adaptor to be able to get a line in insert using the 1/8 NC stereo jack. These will keep the radio signal linked to the radio untill you get in an insert line. Just like when on your home portable stereo insert a headphone and cut the speakers signal, but this time cutting the line in instead the signal out.

Thanks to all who have replied here. Now I get it.....

I used that huge box just because I wanted to install that power point plug coming from the power source included into the cassette pigtail, but you can make the adaptor just for the headphone jack being a pigtail attached somewhere and done.
