I am having a heck of a time getting the 2nd circlip to seat after installing a new SKF u-joint into the slip yoke for my 1972 Charger.

Anybody else had this problem? I removed all corrosion build up. I used a press to keep the bearing cups seated.

I am beginning to think it is the u-joint. Any thoughts on another brand?

Thanks for the thoughts but I kept checking the cups to make sure they remained seated.

I only buy spicer brand, and yes have had that problem over the years with a few brands. SKF was good, made in China now. I file the inside of the yoke flat, if the joint is tight I remove the joint, file both sides the same amount and try again. Just never compress the joint in a vise, put the clip in, and run a tight joint. Spicers have treated me well.

I just ordered a set of Spicers from O’Reilly’s a few minutes ago. Dana is supposed to be the first name in driveline. I was going to thin out the circlips equally before doing anything else. I guess I’ll find out tomorrow. Thanks.

Often when changing U-joints I find a tight fit (I use a vise) so while squeezing the caps tight, I drive the loop out a little with a punch and hammer. Usually just requires a tap or two and you will get enough clearance for the C-clip. After removal from the vise/press a rap with a hammer on each side of the shaft at the weld will set everything in place. Always check for easy rotation after installation.

I worked next to a "silver-tongued" line mechanic that sold several of his regular customers on repacking their U-joints on a regular basis. Pretty easy money.

I have only used Spicer/Dana U-joints.
Never and issue - purchase ones without grease zerks.

Thank you for the tips. Already tried using the vise. Still a no fit condition for the clips. I am confident the Dana Spicer pieces will do the trick. I measured with Vernier calipers and the Spicer units are narrower across the clip grooves by 0.020”. Plenty of space to fit the 2nd clip.

Yes strength, not that spicer greasables are junk.

Some people bend an ear when removing ujoint
I always support cross and use oversized socket to remove caps so no way to bend an ear
