I realize this forum is for bad-*** B
bodies, but I've spent countless hours
on other forums trying to find an answer
as to wether an old transmission I have
is a 3 or 4 speed. It's out of a 1941 Dodge
WD21 1 ton pickup. There is a casting
number on the shifting plate - C35661.
I read on another forum that this casting
number was used on both the 3 and 4
speed transmissions, and the only way
to tell the difference was the PTO ports.
The 3 speed has two (one each side),
and the 4 speed has one PTO port on
the passenger side. I can find no
verifiable documentation from Dodge
that states the differences. I've found
some documentation that states various
transmission models, but nothing which
tells me what the model numbers are.
I hope there are some super sleuths here
that might be able to help me out.
Thanks!

Can't you spin the input and see the change in output shaft speed as you shift it?
Mike

Looks like its a 3speed.

What is the serial number of your truck? Number is located on left front frame rail just rear of the Shock absorber and Data plate on glove box if present and readable. All non-winch model 1/2 tons had the PTO opening on the right (Passengers side) of the case from what I've been told. C35661 is most certainly a casting number for the Non-winch Trans. case in the WC 1/2 tons. That's the number that was on my Trans. in my 41 WC-12.

No, can't spin it. Still hooked up to the
engine and mounted to the frame.
Thank you, though, for your suggestion.

BeepBeepRR thanks for looking.
I found the following using the link
in your post. It's the very next post
from that which you copied;
"If both your transmissions have right hand PTO plate only they are the standard four speed case,"
It's still a mystery.
