It was a great weekend racing, then it wasn't

That's really bad luck! Sure hope that it can be repaired. Hope you have another engine/short block. Shame to happen early season. Hope you get something together soon.

I hate seeing that.
I've been dealing with problems all year so far but nothing catastrophic.
Hopefully you'll have it repaired for Norwalk in July.

So sorry that you had issues during an otherwise fantastic weekend. Hopefully the Mega-block can indeed be saved (???). Wishing you the best for a quick re-build, better than before.

OH that’s a bugger. Hoping there’s no head damage. So what’s the plan. Fix the block or maybe time for a new alloy block and take a load of weight off the front?

I believe DVW says he has a lead on a used megablock needing sleeves.

Any update? Was the block salvageable or did you find another one?

What did the crank look like? If it just got he journal, Shaftech can fix it for sure, as long as it didn't start to crack from the radius on up... (don't ask me how I now this... because I'm not that smart. LOL)

Mine did the same thing back in 17 at Norwalk.... slowed down, but the oil pressure was good, along with the oil temperature. Next pass bang... And I have a Systems One oil filter, it would have been easy to check it.

dont know wheter this helps or not but it "seems" like a good deal..cross bolted mains 528 wedge mopar crate motor..if i wasn't so far into my new motor that i'm getting ready to install in the next few weeks. ON ebay right now. NOT MY MOTOR....

Looking at the oil filter would be what I should've done. Never crossed my mind. That's the thing that gets me the most that I never thought to do it. My new saying; spend and learn. Anyway the block is being repaired. My machinist/friend says he has fixed worse. Crank is bent .010" it is probably repairable. The plan is to weld the block. Hard block to the lower water pump holes. Install a #3 sleeve. Bore to 4.530" as ring availability is limited above the current 4.505". Now will be 580". New Molnar rotating assy and pistons. Lots of nicks from flying shrapnel in the rods and pistons. There are 3 of each untouched. Cam and lifters survived. The valves have 750 passes on them. New valves, springs, and locks. Touch up the valve job and skim cut. Check line hone on the block and skim the decks. Balance everything. The only two hold ups are the rods are in the finish machining process and pistons are 6-7 weeks. In the mean time I hope to get a little paint touch up work and the hood painted. I'll have time to paint my house and garage.

been there and still there !!

which oil filter do u use ?
moroso discontinued mine, #22465 no by-pass,
been looking at wix 51810 diesel truck unit, no by-pass .
and wix 57003R with by pass..

Doug, there was a guy up your way that used to weld blocks that went by the name Razor. Is he still doing it? He did ours years ago.

51515R Wix is what I use.

never concerned about the low pressure opening of the bypass valve ?

Manufacturer's Part Number:
51515R
Oil Filter Style:
Canister
Thread Size:
3/4 in.-16
Filter Bypass Relief Valve:
Yes
Relief Valve Open (psi):
8-11 psi
Anti-Drainback Valve:
Yes
Smallest Particle Filtered:
61 microns
its big brother, the 1 i'm looking at has has the bypass opening at 18-22 pounds..because all manf seems to have deleted No by pass units..

I 'd rather have dirty oil than no oil. The bearings in the motor that just hurt itself all look great except for the for the 2 injured rods. My best guess at the failure was oil pan damage 3 weeks ago from the wheelstand. The rod bearings had 476 passes on them. The roller lifters have over 550. Id say they had clean oil that wasn't bypassed.

Sorry to see that happened. But still a good day when you are surrounded by family and friends.

Update; Block is being welded. The cracks aren't structural or into water. The #3 cylinder is getting sleeved. Machine work; bore to 4.530" (due to ring size availability) deck, line hone, valve job, skim cut heads, balance. New parts; crank and rods (Molnar), pistons (Ross), rings, bearings (Clevite), oil pump (Melling), valves (Ferrea), valve locks and springs (Pac), dampner (ATI). The cam, valve train all survived well. Pan has been straightened out and is ready to weld. The Fluidampner was cracked and leaking. All the reusable parts are cleaned and stored. Biggest holdup is pistons, 6-7 weeks. I was going to paint the outside of my house and shop this Summer. So soon I'll be at it. Hope to get the hood painted and some touch up as well while I'm waiting. Fortunately I've been hustling jobs out of the garage for the last couple of years to establish a fund to support my race habit. The fund just got smaller.

Great to see you’ve got a solid plan and have things headed in the right direction. It’ll be interesting to see if the slightly bigger bore will effect performance at all. I’m guessing it’ll run right where it did prior, but you never know.
Good luck with the painting projects.

Block is progressing. I took the heads apart Tuesday. The #3 chamber needs to be welded. The piston knocked the intake seat loose. The seats will be removed and then pressure checked. for leaks first. I picked up the crank last Friday. Waiting on pistons, rods, valve springs and rings.
