Intermittent squealing

for kicks check torque converter bolts, one might have loosen and be hitting the shield. If its really up front it could be the cam shield rubbing on the timing case cover.I hope not. I know Im shooting darts at the problem. If you could make a video it would help. I hope you find it.

I thought about the torque converter bolts, but they are good and it's not a metal on metal sound at all. It's a squeak, like a loose/bad belt or maybe a power steering pump that's really low on fluid (neither of those are the issue). And the past three times I started it, no squeal.

Well please keep us updated. Id love to know what it is.

Thank you. I will. If it squeals again, I'm going to pull apart the front and replace the water pump (it's lived a good life) and see what I find. These always some new challenge with these old girls.

Wow thats loud I hope its not a bearing.

I'm in the process of pulling out the water pump, harmonic balancer, timing cover, etc. to look for something obvious. My oil pressure is fine, so I'm doubtful it's a bearing. And I think a bearing would sound a lot worse

With no belts installed, it's gonna be in
5 different areas to check. Crank, distributor,
oil pump, torque converter, or fuel pump.
(if mechanical). The pitch of the sound in
your vid is too low for a belt squeal. JMHO.

Has this motor been rebuilt? If so, maybe the oil slinger is on backwards, or the bolts for crank pulley are took long and hitting the time chain cover.

My buddy said it to high of a sound for a bearing

I hope so. I let my friend who races Chevys listen to it and he said it sounded like a bearing to him. I've pulled off the water pump, harmonic balancer and timing cover and there's nothing that seems out of the ordinary. I drained the oil and it looked like maybe there was some tiny flecks of metal but it was hard to tell and certainly nothing obvious. I'm going to pull the motor and look at the bottom end to be sure.

Thanks Moms68. It was rebuilt about three years ago. The oil slinger was on correctly when I just took off timing cover (it's pretty much impossible to put on backwards) and the crank pulley bolts are fine. I'm suspecting a bearing, which kind of sucks. I'll know soon enough

Is it a squeal or a whistle? I had a holley that sounded just like a squeal with moderate pedal..

Yah thanks Dave, asleep at the switch today.. too much wheel time! Actually sounds like a torque converter/front pump to me.. like an old Chevy sound.

Thanks dadsbee. I don't know what a bad front pump sounds like but the sound, at least to me, is clearly coming from the front of the engine. When it first happened, I had no doubt it was from the front of the engine. I hope you are right.
If the front pump goes bad, can the sound travel through the motor and sound like it's coming from the front of the engine?

Sound does weird things, crawl under and listen... but yah it sounds like an old Chevy low on tranny fluid.

I've basically got the engine ready to pull. Hopefully, it looks OK
