68 Charger R/T Clone refurb

Weather didn't cooperate as much as I would have liked, but I did get the car off the cribs, tie rods, drag link and driveshaft bolts tightened, fender installed, bumper support braces installed. Grill is next, but it might be a couple days before the weather allows.
 
Grill installed and I completed about half of the front end wiring. Ran into a weird issue where the hood is contacting the negative battery post and the hood won’t sit flush. I definitely don’t remember having this problem. Maybe I did something strange when I put in the battery tray. Will have to investigate tomorrow.

Oh, and I tightened the front suspension, added cotter pins to ball joints and drag link nuts.

Tomorrow I’ll finish up the front end wiring, install brake master cylinder and bleed brakes.
 
No pics to show, but have made some slow progress over the last couple weeks.

- Front end wiring is complete except for the headlight motors that I'm still waiting on. All lights work for the first time since I've owned it. :)
- Bumper, valence and turn signals installed. Man that was a struggle. I clearly did not do it the way they did at the factory.
- Trunk lock cylinder broke. Got a new one from Partsmix. New one works great, but I'm bummed I have to use the new key. :( It looks like I can maybe disassemble the old one and swap the lock pins from old to new? Rainy day project (maybe).
- Fixed a crank-but-no-start issue. I had to wire cranking and ignition power together for both the distributor and the ignition box. Annoying to have to run new wires after the looms were all complete. My fault for not knowing ahead of time.
- I have a minor drip at the drain plug.

Still no windshield (long story), but I took it for a quick spin around the block. Came back to a sizeable puddle of trans fluid. Leak appears to be at the front of the pan, can't yet tell if it's from the pan gasket or somewhere higher up. I initially tightened to 150 inch pounds, but now I've read that may be too much when using the silicone gaskets. I'll back down on the torque and see if that helps.

Before I added a fuel pressure regulator it would crank and crank before the fuel pump would send fuel to the carb. Now it fires right away but runs like garbage for the first 12-15 seconds while the pump does its thing. The fuel pressure regulator has enough fuel to get it to fire right off, but I still have a drainback issue that I need to address. I guess a new pump is in my future.

Finding someone that's willing to install the windshield has been a major pain. I've read some threads and it seems like a pain in the neck, but it's either I do it myself or drive 20 mins to a shop with no windshield. :)
 
Sunday blues. Found the trans leak, it's from the front cooler line port. I had a leak from that area before but could never figure out exactly where it was. Looks like I found it. And then I made it worse. :BangHead:

Tried to snug it up just a bit and what was already somewhat stripped is definitely a goner now. Looks like they make helicoils for 1/8 NPT. Not sure there's any way to do it with the trans in the car, but I'll post up in the appropriate section and see what folks think.

I'd either drive the 20 minutes or better yet, convince the shop owner to let one of his guys come and do it at your place. That's the plan I have for my windshield atleast..
 
The headlight motor kit came in. Nice quality stuff, and well put together. I did take a minute and seal up the holes for the wires on the control module. Module fit great under the battery tray, wires were a great length.

Been a while since I posted. Summer got busy with vacation and kids activities.

The car is finally 100% back together! Took it for a drive last Friday around the block for a shakedown, no leaks, though I do have some weeping/dripping from the back of the oil pan (again, ugh).

Trans shifts well, a little abrupt in the 2-3 shift, but I've read that may settle down as I put a few miles on.

On Saturday I went a bit further, probably 20 miles round-trip in a combination of city and highway driving. Temp was higher than I would like on the dash gauge. 210+ for a decent part of the trip, where it used to run around 180-ish. Checking with an IR thermometer it doesn't seem to be quite that high on the water pump, radiator, hoses, etc. I never saw anything over 190. Maybe an issue with the gauge, I'll try another gauge and then sensor to see if I can figure it out. I've adjusted the thermostat on the fan controller down so they kick on sooner, too.

One problem I did have on my longer trip was intermittent loss of hydroboost and power steering. When I got back from my trip I could smell something really hot in the engine bay. Dripped water on various components until I got to the PS pump and gearbox. Both were sizzling hot. From another thread, it looks like the pump may have gone bad, or can't keep up with the demands of hydroboost. It's a rebuilt Federal pump, which I've read aren't so great with hydroboost, so may be time to upgrade to a Saginaw unit? I still have a couple other things to check first.

The new fuel pump fixed the fuel drainback issue and my 20+ seconds of cranking is down to only a couple.

I did add a CVF alternator bracket kit. For under $110 it's a really nice kit.

I will say, the sound deadening and carpet make a very big difference. It's still pretty loud, but a lot more bearable. :)

Overall I'm pretty pleased with where things are, though I still have some fine-tuning to do. I need to redo the passenger seat adapter brackets, figure out what I want to do with seatbelts and a handful of other small-ish things. If I can get the brakes sorted and few more things dialed in by the end of the month I may consider heading down to Bowling Green and checking out Moparty.
 
Congrats! Looks great. They are fun to drive once you get the bugs worked out. Hope to see you at the moparty if I can make it down there.
