Intermittent squealing

Here is an update. I pulled the motor and checked the main bearings. All good. Whatever is making that sound, it's 99% not bearings. I took engine to a well-known local machine shop in Western Pa. to get it checked over just to be sure and get some work done (since I already had it out of the car). I learned two things -- they said flat out that it's not a bearing and suspect it's vacuum related (like a PCV not ventilating), and I also learned Bob George and AJ of Bob George Racing are really nice people, and Bob has the sickest Mopar shop ever! It's freakin unreal

Intermittent squealing, eh ? Yeah, I know about that. There was this kid in grammar school who used to squeal on us troublemakers every now and then. Until one of the other kids beat the piss outta him. No more squealing.

Very strange. It does sound like metal on metal so I can’t picture the vacuum leak explanation.

After listening to the audio a few times, there is an apparent high pitched vacuum sound after the squealing stops, that modulates with the RPMs.

Not sure what it was... as it was doing it when I brought it in the garage to tear down. Different carb spacer, new gaskets, a carb rebuild and a different brake booster after car restoration and the squeeling/whistle is gone.

I'm kind of hoping that happens for me. When I put everything back together, the squealing will be gone. I'll just be glad when the engine shop calls and tells me the motor is fine. That's all I care about. Anything else is no big deal

I believe I figured it out (with some help from the guys over on FABO on a completely different topic thread I posted). I bought an aftermarket harmonic balancer and idiot me, I pulled the dust shield and felt "donut" off the old balancer and put the dust shield and a new donut on the new aftermarket balancer.
I did not realize that dust shield is actually pressed on and part of the factory balancer. This was about three years ago.
The dust shield is worn and cracked and loose and I'm almost certain it was spinning around, causing the squeal. I showed it to a friend who races Chevys and he said "That's your problem." So the dust shield is getting tossed (apparently you don't really need them with aftermarket balancers), and I think that will solve it.
Turns out I yanked my motor to check the main bearings for nothing, but I'm putting in new pistons (I have old 1980s heavy TRWs in there) and bearings, so it wasn't a total waste of effort. Thanks to everyone!

Old-timer suggestion. Take a bar of soap and press it against the inside of the belt while running. The squeal will go away and the belt will be fine. No idea why this works.
