Does deeper axle gearing HELP or HURT the transmission?

I’m guessing that the main difference would be the hole shot, when the high revving engine has all this intertia/ momentum built up, transferring this additional energy through the tranny/driveline, like dumping the clutch on a manual tranny. The 4.10’s will allow the car to accelerate a little quicker, converting more of that potential energy into movement, kinetic energy, and less twisting stress through the tranny/driveline. Once underway, I would guess the tranny would see about the same torque no matter the rear gears , only the true torque output of the engine.

It changes the stresses on the driveline as its easier to move the load . Just like putting your arm out at full extension and have someone push your hand to your side , pretty easy ? Now bring it in 2/3 of the way and try it... not so easy. Just like using a short or long pry bar or breaker bar... just depends on what you want to do.

Just like the previous poster said, it’s the transition from stop to go and the converter that see the difference. That’s it.

After that, no difference. The engine doesn’t make less power because of the gears. At some nutty ratio, like 8:1 or 4WD low in a truck, just making the engine spin up and getting the fuel flowing will take some power away but for our subject cars here, no difference.

Yes. Had a '69 Barracuda with a 7 1/4 diff with 2.76 gears, 904. Used to hammer it, never any issues. Now have an 8 3/4 with 3.23 gears, 727. Hammer it and never any issues. Both have 318 engines, probably why the transmissions have no issues.

I don't see what your post has to do with the original question. Are you indicating that because your Super Bee feels like it's falling apart and couldn't pull the skin off rice pudding that any gears steeper than 2.76 will cause the same effect in other cars? Your Super Bee is not a prime example going from your previous posts.
I wasn’t going to post in this thread. I did because I drove a car for many years with 2.76 gears. Doing so didn’t have any noticeable detrimental effect on the transmission. That part, I believe, does have relevance to the original post.

I did ramble on about my Super Bee which has been a disappointment to me. Theoretically, the Super Bee was supposed to be a step up, or improvement, over the 318 car I had before it, regardless of gear ratio. That part has nothing to do with this thread.

Neither of these cars are running 35’s or 37’s.

ran Bella with the 500ci 6sp zf .45od 2.76! David Pearson would have been in the rearview!
3.55's now 6th is usable a bit!
