Anyone with a Jeep? Looking for the BEST Jeep Forum...

Thats one vehicle I've never had any desire to own. I've driven a quite a few to include the old M151 Military Jeeps when I was in the 82nd. Definitely durable as we beat the crap out of them, rolled them, etc. Not at all a good road going vehicle (military tires sucked for that). I never liked the interiors and that is important to me plus everyone I know who had a newer one had issues with the tops leaking. I know they have a cult following but I just can't get on board with it, I'd much rather have an actual truck.
They would be lousy on the road as those tire are specifically Off-Road classified when it comes to Military Vehicles. Had to figure those types when load planning to load them up for C-130/C-141/C-5 transport..cr8crshr/Bill:usflag::usflag::usflag:

I'm also looking into a SUV Jeep for my grocery getting what with the price of gas going through the roof. I am not in the size and caliber that most here have been posting as I am looking for a Cherokee AWD/FWD with the 3.6 V-6 as most of the research I have been doing say that that is the best set up for both daily driving and some light to moderate off road running. Not into hill climbing or hard core off-roading/stump pulling, but just need to have a reliable one that will save on gas and when the weather is bad or I am driving over the Sierras or up in BLM land, I have some decent advantages. Mostly from 2015 to 2019 used with low mileage as these pockets of mine ain't runnin' deep. Looked at a few and some with low mileage looked and drove excellent. Good pricing for my budget also. Seeing as how I don't really drive a lot anymore, might just be what I need. I still plan on keeping my pick up 4WD for when I need something a tad bigger and stronger. Hell I on have 133000 miles on it and it is a 2010...cr8crshr/Bill :usflag::usflag::usflag:

So anyone who is familiar with my posts knows I am really into the week long event called Cruisin the Coast, usually the first or 2nd week of October, and the weekend is the pinnacle of the event. Over 8,000 registered cars and double that just cruising around.
Well this weekend is "Jeepin the Coast" and my wife took "Chilly Willy" there and had fun. I was working...
Here's a few pix:

I have about 6000 posts over on jeepforum.....it's a great sites. Lots of very knowledgeable folks on it. I have not been in there much since I killed my Jeep though. It was a mildly lifted, tuned and modified Jeep Grand Cherokee, WJ shape...the last proper GG...with solid axles front and rear. Not a model you can get there though as it was the CRD version powered by the five cylinder Merc 2.7 diesel. And like lots of Jeeps sold in Europe it was NOT built in the USA....but in Austria. So unlike the US ones had a fully galvanised bodyshell. Loved that car!

If it's NOT built in Toledo, Ohio it's NOT a real Jeep !

That looks like an "Enforcement Unit"
Am I correct??

Not sure if you mean an ex- police Jeep ? No, just a plain jane Cherokee that we did some work to. BTW, was just joking in my post. If everyone could see the type of people that make up a good portion of the Toledo Jeep workforce, I can't believe anyone would buy a Wrangler or Gladiator.

Well, since we (she) has added $54K to our debt obligations, I'd like to know why you say that?

Good luck with that Eco (LOL) diesel. I recommend deleting it the minute that it's out of warranty. The DPF filter and DEF system will give you fits as it ages. The added weight and noise isn't worth it IMO. The start/stop feature makes me scratch my head as the last thing that you want to do is shut down a diesel with a hot turbo still spinning. Makes me wonder. Good luck in steamy Louisiana with that start/stop.

My Jeep can do anything those small ones can except fit threw small trees I just run them over !

I heard about the DEF system. Not leaving it empty when it indicates low level should help prevent problems.
I showed my wife the "start/stop" button and told her pressing it to disable should happen every time, right after she hits the start button (ignition 'switch') I was disappointed they put that on a turbo diesel too.
Also, there's an aftermarket device that automatically turns off the start/stop function.

The stop/start feature can be disabled. There is information in the Jeep forums and maybe utube. I haven’t done that yet on my 21 GC until I’m sure warranty won’t be affected.

You can never let that DEF tank run empty, the computer will stop the engine before that. And being low or empty has nothing to do with the DPF filter and the problems that you will have. That filter "loading up" will put the diesel into "regen" mode, which increases heat in the "one box" upwards of 1000 degrees, yes 1000 to burn the carbon and soot from the filter. A lot of idling and/or low RPM driving and starting and stopping will be the primary cause of DPF issues. Oh yeah, and DEF is basically ammonia made from cow piss. Good luck.
PS I don't even want to get into when the ECM "derates" your engine because the after treatment isn't functioning properly.

Well, there's no turning back now, and since I'm the one who insisted on the diesel and mandatory upgraded transmission, what can I do to minimize the chances of problems?
I have to get DEF fluid today. Is one kind any better than another? I see Blue DEF a lot, and I'm going to Sam's Club, so that's probably what I'd buy.
What about aftermarket "tuners"? If it would void the warranty, that's not an option, but if not, or once the warranty is expired, are there "tuner tricks" that can help?
I'm not big on extended warranties on anything, but I got a 5yr/100k warranty on my van and on the Toyota Rav4. Didn't use it on either!!
Should I look at an extended warranty? Any diesel fuel additives that help? Brand of diesel?
The van has around 128K miles on it and the Rav4 was totalled when my wife tried to make it amphibious, and that's how we wound up with her Gladiator.

Blue DEF is definitely the best available, albeit pricey. Make sure the misses understands that she can NEVER let that DEF tank run out. The ECM will completely disable the engine. That's Govt. mandated, keeps the tree huggers happy. As for diesel, you are pretty safe in La. because you don't get that winterized garbage, but beware of BioDiesel. Try to purchase real on-road diesel. BioDiesel tends to grow this weird algae type substance if left to sit in the heat for too long. Ask me how I know LOL Again, you probably won't have that problem because you don't have 150 gallon tanks and it's not going to sit for extended periods of time.
The best recommendation I can give you for the DPF filter is to "blow it out" whenever possible. What I mean by that is get it out on the highway and run it at high RPMs for around 10 miles or so. Do that by dropping to a lower gear and running it at the rev limiter. Remember, it's a diesel, so you won't hurt it by running it at the limiter. That will keep that filter from getting clogged. Once it's clogged, it will need to "regen" to clean it out. And try to NEVER shut the vehicle down while it is regenning. Look up the regen process for that engine and after treatment for specific info. Tuners and additives don't affect the after treatment that I know of. They generally change the parameters on fuel and air flow. The after treatment is the spent gasses that have already exited the exhaust.
