1966 426 Hemi
engine side casting # 2468330-1 10-8-66
but the top pad has no numbers at all on it just 2 letters MG
I can see a trace of the original machining marks on the pad so I don't think it's been machined down but why would there not be other marking on the pad?

What's the date stamped on the bottom pan rail by the starter?

I have not looked yet. I hope to have the engine pulled from the car today.
Everything is ready to come out, just need to put a chain on it and lift it out.

In '66 there wont be one will there?? And in October, this would be considered to be used in a '67 if production factory.
Sound like a warrantee, or early dealer supplied replacement block. Nice find either way.

This 426 is in a 1966 Coronet factory 426 Hemi car.
One owner since new. He special ordered the car in 1966 and picked the car up late in 66 or very early 1967. for the start of the 1967 race season. He only raced the car 3 years 1967-1969
and retired the car after that. The car sits with 9700 original miles.
The original owner passed away but from the stories he has told me over the years, It is the original engine and trans to the car. I inherited the car after his passing.
I'm working on getting the car back in running condition.
One question I have.
The original owners' name is Mike Gilbert. If the car was special ordered for racing purposes, Could the MG on the upper pad be his initials the plat put on the engine to designate it going in his car?

Here is a picture of the upper pad before I cleaned it.

Maybe engine builder or Mike himself stamped it. Those 12.5 pistons didn't come from the factory. Any other cylinders rusted as bad as #7?

I also have a 66 built 426H and it has a name stamped into the pan rail which I investigate and was told was a drag racer on the east coast some where. I believe this was done so that the block could be ID'd at the machine shop or if stolen. In other words probably not an uncommon practice.

Cylinders # 2,4,& 8 all look about like #7.
I have them soaking in vinegar right now.
It also has roller lifters in the engine. ( Also Not factory )

Wonder how much of an over bore will clean them?

Appears to have a roller cam. (+ the pistons). Someone built the engine and therefore perhaps stamped the owners initials on it while it was at the machine shop.

You do know that vinegar will ruin aluminum and etch metal don’t you? Know this will take time but it is the end result.

MG. Do you think that’s just an odd coincidence? The factory didn’t know this was going to be MG’s engine when it was built. There is no way that’s a factory marking.

Sorry but 10-8-66 (October of 66) Casting date is to late to belong in a 66 model year car.... 66 production had ended in July 66... 67 model year production started in August of 66..

Very cool car with great history but that's not the original engine.... Really not surprising, race cars were about going quicker & faster, not stampings and date codes.... The only numbers racers worried about is the elapsed time to cover a quarter mile....

Agreed, and the SPD is mar 11 66.

Exactly, and who would be surprised to hear a racer had spares.... or had a better engine built from his dealer supplied warrantee block and ultimately the original engine was lost or destroyed in the process??

BTW, 4 notches in the pad mean 4 rebuilds maybe??

Or sold to another racer to finance more racing...
