I came across this forum searching for answers to a problem I am having with the installation of a 46RH in my 1974 Dodge Charger SE. I have been into Mopars since I began working on them as a dealer tech in 1959. I retired in 2008 after working for the same dealership for 46 years. Now I work on my own for fun and satisfaction. I live on and still manage the family farm near Alhambra, Il not far from St. Louis, Mo.
In around 1978, I purchased the Charger for my daughter Kim to drive when she was in high school. Then when she went off to college where she couldn't keep it on campus, my son Jonathan began driving it. Newer cars and life changes happened. I planned to replace the 318 CID engine with a 400 and 727 I had ready to rebuild. Jonathan wanted the 318 for another car so we pulled it in 1990. Then the Charge sat under roof here on the farm until last year. Of course mice made homes in it. I stripped it completely. Had the the engine bay and underside aqua media blasted. The exterior paint is in fair shape so I left it alone for now. I have had the rusted out floors replaced, painted the engine bay body color and sprayed the underside with truck bed liner. All the drivetrain mechanicals are reconditioned.
I am not sure if I should post this here or on a separate post so I will say what my problem is with the 46RH installation here now. I have managed with some heating & beating and trimming and grinding on the transmission to get enough clearance for the transmission above it in the tunnel but cannot get the speedometer cable on the pinion because it is right close to the arch in the body where the rear mount bolt on. I can't find anyone fixing that problem on a Google search. I am hoping someone here can help and maybe post some pictures. If the engine/trans were 3/4in further back it would go just fine. Also I am sure the speedometer cable will be too short as the pinion sets 7 inches further back on the OD unit. I would appreciate any help.

Welcome aboard from Ohio.

Let me be the first to say Welcome!!!! First, you posted here and thats good! , and you will receive plenty of warm welcomes.
You have a lifetime of Mopar experience!! Great to have a man of a life time of experience.
Yes, repost your question in the proper spot and someone can answer it I bet. I can not.

Welcome aboard Ken! I'm not far from you in northwest Tennessee (3 counties over from the state line).

I'm not going to claim to be an expert on this -- I've only built one big block -- but if you went with the 400 versus the factory's 318, perhaps just changing out the k-member will get your transmission more in line with where it should be.

Make yourself at home! Before you know it you'll feel like you have a new extended family. :welcome:

Oh yeah, be ready for an onslaught of picture requests. We're very visually oriented around here and don't really care what stage or state of condition it's in. We just wanna see it. :D

Welcome from Michigan the Motor City! 440'

Welcome from Canada! A tech since 59! I'm sure you will be a wealth of information for a lot of us.

Welcome from central Indiana. Actually a few pictures of your problem would help to understand what you need to do.

We're going to need to see that Charger.

Isn't there a replacement rear arch/mount bracket made to address that issue?

Involves cutting/welding.

Welcome from AZ... I would like to thing that an electronic speedometer would fix the problem. My buddy used one on his '37 Dodge with a 331 Hemi and a 518 transmission.

Ken I’m up the road from you literally. You’re going to have to notch the trans crossmember and fab the mount from what I was told.. Speedo cable maybe available from a truck! Guess what we need too! And of course welcome!:xscuseless:

Since I'm new to this forum I hope this is the way to post responses to questions or requests for more information. Here are two pictures of the problem area doing the 727 to A518 transmission swap.
