I am converting my single exhaust to dual on my '69 Charger. The old system is now removed and I find the right exhaust manifold thermal damper spring broken and damper held open with tie wire. Should I remove the entire assembly or try finding a new spring? Is the damper necessary? All opinions and sources are welcome....Dave

Just tack weld the heat riser wide open. If you want it to look correct replace the spring, otherwise it doesn't matter. It was just there to force heated air through the intake manifold for carb choke operation.

Is that why it seems the carb is not choking at start-up?

Not unless you're starting it in the mountains on a snowy day. If you still have a heat style OE choke it should work just fine with the heat riser locked open. My Superbird starts just fine, choke works correctly and I have mine locked open.

If your choke isn't working it's either broken or not adjusted properly.

I doubt it. Most guys just disable or remove the flopper. Your choke probably isn't adjusted correctly.

I know very little about carbs and chokes. I can say starting always takes two separate key cranks to start and the engine does not race once it starts. Nor does it need to be "kicked down" with the pedal. BTW it's a 2bbl. Carter OE.

Your 383 in 67 to 69 used a stamped counter weight.

In 70 they went to a solid cast round counterweight.

My 69 Barracuda came with a cast weight. I drilled a small hole it it and wrapped a wire through the damper and around the bolt for the down pipe.
