If a higher mileage 727 is slow getting into reverse and needs some throttle to get moving backwards when first started but seems fine when warmed up, is there a simple cause that can be addressed or is it overhaul time. All other aspects of the trans operation seems fine.
Thanks dan

could it be the low-reverse band is out of adjustment? Drop the pan and check it out.

Go basic. Pull the pan see whats in it. If nothing serious is seen and looks ok, no debris adjust the bands and replace the filter. Converter could have a drain so drain that to. Fill it up and see where it takes you.

Most likely converter has drained back and needs to be somewhat filled up before it will move the car. 727's don't cycle the fluid in park so put the car in neutral for about 10 seconds before putting in reverse or drive when you first fire it up and your slippage will most likely go away.

Have had several over the years that would do that. Putting a mild shift kit in should help cure it.
Even the most mild shift kit for these transmissions comes with a replacement manual valve that goes in the valve body that charges (fills) the converter in park. This is the reason why you have to put a 727 in neutral to check the fluid. With the new manual valve you can check fluid in park after it's put in.

I've had freshly built 727s that took a few secs for it to engage when 1st started and put into gear.
That manual valve will fix it.
I have a 904 that's been sitting, only have 55k on it from brand new ('78) that I know the seals are starting to go. It's not as bad once I start driving it for the season as it is the 1st time out of storage for the season but it's still draining back when it sits overnite.

Dan, if you want to check out if it's converter drain back, just start your car in neutral (pump is working). If you have the same problem it is not converter drain back causing your problem. Then you will have to start looking else where for the problem.

You guys need to read what he posted. It goes forward ok when cold only reverse is lazy. So it is not a drain back problem. He sure does not need a shift kit that will do nothing. As I said pull the pan, look whats in it and if nothing serious , check and adjust the bands and replace the filter. If it works fine. He wants to try the easy first. If the service does not help it the seals most likely are worn.

Funny, I don't see where he posted that....

Only that it doesn't go into reverse... Perhaps he isn't trying to go forward because his car is in a garage & would make contact with an immovable object if he were to go forward...

Perhaps try putting the car into neutral for 15-20 seconds, it costs nothing & you don't even get dirty puling the trans pan.... If it works, Great!!! If not? Nothing lost.....

++1 all the above. Don't forget that reverse needs about triple the pressure compared to the forward gears.

Your correct that I really don’t know if when it’s cold it’s sluggish in forward. I back out of the garage so I’ve only tested reverse. I have every intention of dropping the pan for a look see also and to adjust the bands. When seals are mentioned would you specifically be referring to the servo that operates the low reverse band or some other?

I have had 3 727's in two different B-bodies. Each trans acted exactly as you describe. After start up, I just put the trans in neutral for a few seconds and the issue goes away.

Exactly... Don't throw it in reverse, put it in neutral, let the engine run for 30-45 seconds in neutral then put it in gear... If the gear is normal then the problem is the convertor draining & pulling the pan won't fix it... Just learn to put it in neutral & don't worry about it....

To all who said put it in neutral first, that does resolve the issue.
