WIX Oil Filters, for 383.

O.k.
So, I am pretty much a WIX filter fan, but would accept a "better idea". But put that a side.
Question. I am being told that the WIX 51515 is the replacement for my matching numbers 1970 383 R/R, when I believe the correct WIX filter is WIX 51068???
Could someone steer me in the right direction?

The Guys down at O'reilly Auto Parts owe me a beer! They are insisting that it is NOT WIX 51515, but the WIX 51068! Honestly. I am not sure of the difference, but there must be!

See the difference. The 51515 has been used on Mopars forever. Use the short one only when you have clearance issues.

When I worked in the auto parts business I believe in the Napa/Wix filter book listed up till 1969 they took the 51515 filter and in 1970 they went to a 51068 filter they are basically the same filter except the 51068 is a little shorter version of a 51515 filter.

I just bought two Wix filters for my 70 383 and the correct number is 51515.

YES....IN COMPLETE AGREEMENT ..... the shorter version is applicable for later B/RB engines when, I believe circa 1974 or 75 when the accessory drive when the PS pump was moved lower on the block, pethaps to accomodate an emission air pump, and the belt drive passed thru the area, necessitating the use of a shorter oil filter. Use the 51515 filter where possible as it offers more filter area and at a lower pressure drop thru the filter. Just my opinion of course...

The 51068 can be used on the small block also. I use one on my car that has the factory 90 degree filter adapter.

I run Wix 51515 on the 440 in my '70 Satellite. No issues. I ran Wix filters on my Duramax as well. Solid product.

But are they designed and fabricated to the same specs? In terms of filtration (micron rating), flow capacity (GPM), burst pressure rating and bypass valve setting. Sometimes, just because a name brand is the manufacturer, it does not mean an identical set of specs. What is the price difference? It would be nice to know the comparison criteria.....one does not decide on price alone....at least I do not.....

I'm a DEDICATED WIX filter guy!!
IF, like the NAPA Gold filter IS made in an identical manner w/identical materials and specs to the WIX brand we buy, the Walmart SuperTech is the same, I may be able to save some coin and have another source for filters :thumbsup:

YES....I also use Wix filters as well.....but the operative word is: "IF". Without some form of substantiation, other than a counter person's opinion.....like the manufacturers published data, its just hearsay. The old saying: "I'm from Missouri...show me" applies. How much "coin" is being saved??....A few dollars?? To me, the cost savings is insignificant....I would rather have the "piece of mind knowledge" knowing my filters are up to the task. Possibly, the real savings may be in doing a deal for a case price of filters vs individual purchase.
But, this is just my opinion of course...

MANN filters are good as well. They're made by Mann+Hummel, who also happen to own Purolator and Wix.

Now that's some significant cost savings......NOT! For a $ 0.20 difference (plus tax) I'd just stick with the name brand.....but if one purchased a large enough quantity of filters, perhaps one could save enough dinero to fund the purchase of a few brown bottles of one's favorite brand.......just a thought....
