Cylinder head and cam question

Have not had a heat riser on a musle car since 1975, and I've lived in MI, OH, and PA. My daily driver, when I lived in MI, did not have one.

It's mainly anti-icing i guess, and not many of us would be driving it in winter time and have the car outside so the need for it is gone i guess.
 
Got the FelPro high heat gaskets in the valve covers. They have no ears so I had to zip tie them until the sealer set up. Installed them and touched up the paint and it is starting to look like an engine again.

It's crazy how different the paint photographs in different light. The engine bay shot is the true colour.
 
More cleaning and painting this weekend. Managed to clean the A/C compressor pretty well in place. I love using old towels to mask around irregular shapes. Worked out pretty nice.

Got to get everything buttoned back up so I can break in that cam Kim.
 
Wont be long now. Boy it seems to be an never ending job to restore these old car's. Just when you think you have it all painted then one more thing pop's up. Grate job.
 
Got a bunch of bracketry installed but found out I have some fitment issues to solve.

Got a couple of problems solved. The drivers side compressor support just needed the holes enlarged to 1/2 inch to get everything to line up. The coil bracket wouldn't work because the front manifold boss was higher and interfered with the passenger compressor support. A little bending and cutting and problem solved. I also got the alternator installed. I still need to pick up a socket head bolt for the drivers side under the return spring bracket, because there is no room to get a socket or wrench on it.

Same here Kim. Had to take my wife's Crossfire in to diagnose a check engine light. Only had to walk three blocks over and back and I felt like a wet rag each time.
 
Got quite a bit done this weekend. All belts and hoses are on and cooling system has been filled. Distributor is in and wiring is hooked up. Basically just needs plugs, cap and wires and fuel lines and carb.

I have limited time to work on it, basically a few hours each day on weekends. I am going to see if I can get my buddy over next Sunday to help me keep an eye on things for cam break in.

This is all good advice. Although the engine is original internally it has been upgraded with dual 2 1/4 exhaust to 2 inch tailpipes off stock manifolds. It also has a performer intake and 625 street demon carb. I am not sure about changing the cam, mainly because of all the A/C stuff hanging off the front of the engine. The part that makes me nervous is the 54 year old timing gear. If I have to change it a new cam will go in. The stock cam is only 390 lift
Do the gear also.
