The under support of my original hood is completely rusted out.
I would like to find a good donor hood and replace the inner structure to the original hood.
The outer skin is in pretty good shape.
I would like to keep all of the original sheet metal to the car.
Has anyone replaced just the support on a hood like this?
Difficulty?
Or would replacing the entire hood be the better thing to do?

Unless you are able to do the work yourself, another hood is less expensive.

Solid original hoods usually go for $100 at swap meets and shows.

But... If it's an original paint hemi car than I'd just not touch it and live with the rust.

If your car's getting repainted than just get a new hood and save the original one somewhere.

if you just put a nice hood on it, no one will know......... although splitting a hood apart allows for total cleaning and rust removal

"no one will ever know" if I take a vin and fender tag from a 440 R/T rust bucket and put them on a 318 shell... :drama:

But seriously just get a new hood and don't bother with all the chisling and spot welding

The chances of reskinning the shell to the skin would be a big task. 1 ,any type of twist or alignment issues while you spot weld . The issue will be fit.

As others have mentioned. Find a clean hood. The 4 dr hoods are the same and theres lots out there.

Paint match is my biggest issue. If I replace the hood I don't really want it to be noticeable but matching 55-year-old paint isn't going to be easy.
We have a Mopar show coming up pretty soon that is only a few miles from me.
I may try to find someone local I can pick a hood up from.
Thanks for the help guys.

I can do the work myself.
I have replaced bedsides, quarters, floors, and core supports.
I have been doing paint and bodywork since I was in high school.
Just never reskinned a hood and I know they will be very flexible with the support removed.
Thanks for all the advice.

what color is the Coronet? Dupont has a camera . If its calibrated properly. It should be able to come within 0.5 of the color on your car. The nice part is you have tops of fenders to blend with a nice cutoff for clear, I know the cowl vent will be a chore. See if they can match with in the 0.5 or fairly close first.

The color is yellow paint code is 81515 . it's a single-stage paint, not BC-CC.
My local paint shop can do an amazing paint match. I was restoring a boat and wanted them to get me a paint to match the interior seats. They scanned it in and mixed the paint up and the match was unbelievable.
I'm sure I could make it look decent but it would still probably be detectable.

Paint can be easily photo-matched with today's technology, even accounting for age.

I've had 100% success matching YY1 and JY3, both notoriously difficult, and also very aged EW1 off white.

The trick is finding someone who knows what they are doing, but that shouldn't be too difficult.

66 and 67 hoods are the same, don't really tend to rust (not sure why yours did) are relatively easy to find, and relatively inexpensive.

Like slimt, posted take the color onto the fender tops.
Single stage is no big deal. Your painter will back mask the fender edges.
1st coat will not hit the tape , 2nd coat will. Then zip off the tape.
