I’m really not disloyal to Mopars

Don’t feel bad. I’ve had several. They are really fun cars. Here’s the one I have now. Yeah that’s a gm next to it. I kinda like anything with a v8.

Hope it doesn't need tires... If it does it would be cheaper to put tires & wheels on it than those TRX tires... But a collector would want those TRX wheels on it...

Which Engine? I've seen 79 pace cars with a 2.3 Turbo & the 5.0... Neither was very powerful... But it was 1979 & all cars were pigs...

Yup Coker makes TRX tires but over $1000 for tires on a $500 car makes no sense....
Yep, first thing i would do with that is get a set of 15"ten holes, or a set of 16" five spokes. (Careful, they made the 16s in four bolt and five bolt pattern. )
Store the trx's.

I think there are more foxes being street raced than daily drivers.

These things are going up in value and are selling for north of $20k in perfect shape!

Foxbodys now are what Mopars were 30 years ago.

The car mags and sites are increasingly writing more articles, and auction prices are going nuts, especially for special editions: A '93 Cobra R sold for $100k recently.

In that shape that car would sell all day long for $5-$7k around me.

I had 2 Fairmount wagons a '78 and a '79 200 6 cyl, C4, PS and PB. The '79 was fully loaded. I considered them suitable replacements for my '66 Valiant wagon, 225, Torqueflite and PS. Since I was dealing in KONIs at the time I put KONI struts, shocks and MOOG trailer towing springs on the Fairmounts along with 185-14 Vanagon tires in the back 'cause I towed a trailer and 185/60-14s in the front 'cause I was crazy! I called them my Mustang Squires. You didn't want to follow me far into the corners or curves!

Saw a fairmont wagon at the sreet races......with a mustang front clip on it. Kinda cool, definitely different.
 
When I was selling KONIs one of my customers was an Air Force Colonel with an LTD II wagon with a 460!
 
The only non-Mopar I ever paid money for was an '89 5.0 Mustang, bought new after
I became disgusted with the unreliability of my 2.2 Turbo GLH.
I found out later (and profited from, ultimately) the fact the car had been stolen off
the lot new and then recovered; the thief apparently couldn't drive a stick and had
burned out the clutch, which was replaced by a Motorsport unit.

The dealer, which was being forced to liquidate by the state of MD for shady practices,
didn't disclose that little fact as the law required, which led to my getting money from them
later on in the court case.
I wound up keeping that car and "driving it in the manner it was designed for" for 15 years
or so - and to date, it's still the most reliable, utterly indestructible car I've ever owned.
Over 250k miles on it, drivetrain never apart including that clutch! It often reminded me of
the Mopar that Ma SHOULD have been building in those days, but wasn't.

No, it never jumped a curb on me...but you learned in a hurry just how easily the design
would do that if you disrespected the car. Very short wheelbase, tight suspension, nose-heavy
V8 - yeah, instant donut machine for sure, even at "only" 225hp.
I wound up winning my division in SCCA ShowroomStock two years running with the car, too -
and the only places the yellow plastic showed through the paint was on the front corners, from
me "helping" IROCs and such out of my way in the corners. :)

That said, would I buy a '79? No thanks. To me, the Fox body starts at '89, when the mass airflow
EEK4 systems began - throttle response, better engine internals, etc. made them bulletproof and fun.
The 2.3? Oh HELL no.
 
Could've been worse. The later models of this ugly body style looked like Ford Tempo's.
 
I'd drive that.

But I'd prefer the t top and turbo 2.3 with 5 speed.

I do like the factory pace car paint.
 
A friend I have seen in a long while had an 89 that was supercharged with a 4 speed if I remember correctly. I drove it once, damn thing wouldn't keep the tires under it, probably just me :steering::lol:
 
Bought my 1st wife a 79 coupe around August of 79. Had 17k miles on it and the price was cheap so I spent a good deal of time test driving it to make sure there wasn't anything wrong with it. 5 years after the divorce, she was still driving it and for a lot of years after. It had the 200 straight 6 which was pretty much a dog but ran good. Stuck on a set of factory Mustang mags on it (Mexican Mustangs)....I assumed but could not find a pic of them. They resembled the snow flake wheels that GM used on the Firebirds around that time. Also covered the headlights with clear Lexan which looked pretty cool I thought. My favorite Stangs were the 1st Fast Backs but don't dislike the Fox body cars but didn't like that everyone and their brother, sister, mother and father had one.....
 
For 500 bucks they MADE you buy it, i wouldn't been able to get the money out of my pocket fast enough. Don't get me wrong, I don't love 'em but 500 bucks? ,there is some money to be made on that car. I wouldn't put a dime in it myself, i had a 86' GT and it was ok but not a dream car by any stretch of the imagination. Nice find.

I bought an 83 5.0 five speed from a man getting transferred to Alaska, where he didnt need a mustang sideways in the snow.
I loved that car, put 100k more, on an 80k car when i bought it. It did NOT like to pass smog, with the 585 holley.
I kinda wished i had kept it and hot rodded it, even with air con, it was lighter than my v8 vega. But it had the little rearend and the non world class 5 speed, so when it finally blew a head gasket, and i had no room to park it.....
 
Pontiac's tale is somewhat similar to Plymouth. It's no secret that both those divisions carried their parent companies thru the HP wars of the early 60s. Both NHRA and Nascar. But in the end? Where was the love? Both scrapped because metrics showed they may have took sales from bigger divisions with in that same company.

Driving my GTX. The #1 topic of discussion especially to the younger crowd was explaining the difference between GTX and GTO. Lol. I take no offense. And explain both platforms are prominent in the muscle car era. But completely different pedigree. (For lack of a better word?) My high school car was a '66 GTO. 389 4-speed that held up well to my younger abuse. The car after. '69 GTX 440 4-speed. The GTX is a step up in design, performance option and in my opinion. A better build quality. (Except electrical. I believe Chrysler **** the bed a bit there?)

I have not looked back since that upgrade. GTO was late 70s for me. GTX was early 80s. But if I was too cheat? It would be a Pontiac.

This is of course JMO. And even though "IM TOTALLY RIGHT!" I understand there are some that may disagree. Below is a quick walk around vid of current '69 GTX. It replaced my first GTX I had to sell in early 90s when 4th child in 5 years was born so I could buy a minivan! I obviously did what I had to do. But that loss was more profound than I realized. Including years of recurring dream. So 3 years ago I found this gem near the Canadian boarder. Same exterior color. Same performance 440. Same 4-speed/Dana 3.54:1 rear. But different personality.

In closing? That recurring dream has stopped.

I have a 95 Dakota that didn't like to pass NOX even when it was fairly new. Don't have to worry about dealing with that anymore but it did teach me how to make it post better numbers without doing all too much :D I still have the thing and put almost 90 miles on it this past Saturday morning. It's more than an old Dodge Dart as it just keeps on going and going and going some more! Rather have an old Dart though....

none after 1970
even then only sport-roof 2+2 (fastbacks)
or before 2005 to about 2014-ish

But in all seriousness, have fun with it
 
I drove my 86 GT 5.0 daily for about 5 years. The car really took a beating and kept going. As bulletproof as any other car I've ever owned. A real step up from the garbage *** piece of **** 85 Shelby charger 2.2 turbo that I had before the Mustang.
