After years in regional theater, Beatty was cast in 1972's “Deliverance” as Bobby Trippe, the happy-go-lucky member of a male river-boating party terrorized by backwoods thugs in “Deliverance.” The scene in which Trippe is brutalized and forced to “squeal like a pig” became the most memorable in the movie and established Beatty as an actor whose name moviegoers may not have known but whose face they always recognized.

When The Howard Stern Show was in Britain years ago they were doing live shows in front of an audience. One of the guests was Ned. As he takes the stage the audience began making squealing noises. An obviously very angry Ned turns to the audience and shouts “I’m sixty five years old and overweight but I dare one of you motherfuckers to come up here and say that!”
There were no takers.
On a separate note, Ned was a well known gun guy and appeared on the cover of The Dixie Gunworks catalogue one year.
A cool guy, played a tough role and kept his dignity.
 
R.I.P. Ned; that was a tuff role to have to deal with from then on. By the way, I believe that the Cop at the end of the movie was the guy who actually wrote the book! (James Dickey????)

He was Dan's dad in Roseanne as well. Good actor. Rest in peace.
 
Darn fine actor who did some really good work in other things.
Damn shame about the stigma attached to that character that he had to live with...

Burt Reynolds said Beatty was in fear of being raped during the entire filming of the movie because one of the actors kept chasing Beatty aroundbthe set telling him tonsqueal like a pig. It became so bad the rest of the cast had to physically restrain the guy.
