Exhaust fumes in car

To prove, or disprove the trunk seal theory, get some of the blue low adhesive tape, and tape off the seam, and test drive. No stink? There's your problem.

Anyone remember riding in the back of the family station wagon with the tail gate window down? Our family had a station wagon, but I don't remember much else.

I think the "Operators Manual" had a caution against operating the vehicle with the window down.

We drive our 64 fury wagon with the back window down part way and no fumes. Exhaust exits on left side behind tire. That is where it was from factory.

Sorry, late to the party. I was having the same issue. Really bad exhaust smell. It would get in my clothes and my wife's hair(I have none). When I went EFI, I thought those issues would go away. Nope.
After talking to a buddy of mine over a few beers he suggested Hi-flow cats. I was not interested because I did not want to rob any horsepower from my precious. Especially considering how much I spent to have a mandrel bent 3" system built. Well 2 $70 cats later and not drop on HP(dyno comparison proven)and I can say that he was right. They did not eliminate 100% of the smell but pretty close. Just my experience and won't cost an arm and a leg.

Just like FURYUS said get some blue painters tape and tape the trunk lid shut and take her for a drive and see what happens. No fumes, you know what it is for sure.
