Painted or Chrome valve covers?

While we are on the subject of paint, does anyone know if this cast A/C bracket should be engine colour or black?

I'm not 100% but I believe black would be correct since the lines and compressor are black.

I thought so too, but not sure if the bracket was installed on the engine before it was painted. I may be able to tell by the back side when I remove it.

Well here is my thought on that. The engines are completely assembled before placed in the engine bay. Things like belts and hoses are placed on after. They are all painted (or were) at once then went to their respective areas to dry. Then as in our case they were chosen for their respective cars, the build sheet was located and options installed then. Don't forget, we do not have vin numbers on the factory engines, just a date code. Depending on the engine the code could be as far as 3 months back. Hemi's maybe longer.
Back then most cars didn't get AC so my thought is it was placed on after.
That is my 2 cents on that anyway.

That sounds logical. The previous owner painted over a lot of stuff without much masking so he probably shot the bracket with the manifold.

Just to finish this thread I ended up using the painted valve covers. The chrome ones were not as nice as I remembered, and had the later model rubber PCV grommet.

I like engine color. As an electrician, these catch my eye. The Positive battery cable should be routed along the fender well through clips (almost back to the firewall then down to the starter). The horn wires should be run through clips. The white wire on the coil should route under the coil (I like black wires). The windshield washer hose should be routed along the fender well all the way back to the firewall -- then up. The hood release cable where it enters the firewall is missing a grommet. The negative battery cable should be re-routed away from the power steering fill. Yes, I'm picky -- I was a Nuclear Quality Assurance Inspector.
Oh My Gosh. NOT an Inspector. Know all too well about red tag's and Green tag's. LOL. Worked on a few nuke plant's back in the day and had to turn in my Rad badge every day. Pulled a lot of MCM wire their also and ran lot's on feeder line's. 5 Mill and 10 Mill plant's.

I was going to reply "driver side paint, pass side chrome". Then I thought somebody would disagree and say "drive side chrome, pass side paint". Oh, well.... ( Seriously, looks great with the paint)

Looks purty!
Now that it's over, I'll just leave this here:

Yep, those are a set of the '67 factory chrome ones as used on the R/T and GTX.
They now reside on Fred's 440 - it's so dark underhood, what with his body color
and all, that the chrome works to brighten things up a bit in there.

And 67 Chargers. My 68 came with factory chrome too.
My preference as well. Without something to break it up, It's a lot of one color. But really, they all look good IMO. I like the black MP ones too.

I actually have two sets of those. This picture is one set that used to be on my cuda, I think they were originally from a 67 GTX. The other set is the same but have the large bracket for the plug wires on the passenger side like my stock ones, except

they have the rubber grommet for the PCV and the chrome is not as good.

My car is now an A/C car and should have painted the motor torques but just had to stay with the Hemi orange.

Looked at a pair of those for the 383. But just went with the ones I had. They look good.
