Muffler recommendations?

I know...this is like asking "what's your favorite oil" or "what tires do you like"...but I figure I'll ask anyway.

My 500 has the numbers-match 318 2bbl, and as far as I can tell...it's never been opened up. All stock. Drives and idles like a plain ol' factory cam. Factory manifolds.

At some point, the OEM exhaust rusted off (I presume), and was replaced with 2" duals, no crossover pipe, and a pair of Flowmaster mufflers.

They're L-O-U-D.

I like the overall tone - it has a nice rumble at idle - but they're just too damned loud going down the road, and the drone will kill you. I want to swap them out for something that's still got a nice tone, just without the overall cruising volume and drone. A local shop is recommending Magnaflow - any thoughts? I've seen them on a lot of the car shows and I know they make a good product, but most of what I've seen them on is new, late-model stuff like Hellcats and Mustangs. They sound good, but...different. I don't want my 50 year old smallblock to sound like a late-model OHC flat-plane crank Mustang.

What have people had good luck with on here, with the smallblock cars? And, is it worth adding some sort of crossover tube? This is not a power-adder change. It's a 318/2bbl with a stock cam and 2.73 gears - it's a cruiser, not a bracket car. But...I DRIVE it. It's not a 6 figure restoration - it's a survivor, warts and all, and I love running it down the road. It's a gorgeous (to me), great-condition old car to me...not some unobtanium, irreplaceable exotic that I'm afraid to drive so all I do is rub it with a diaper. So, I don't want a tin muffler that sounds good but rusts off in 1000 miles of driving - which is fine for off-the-trailer/on-the-trailer show cars, but not for a driver. It's not a daily driver - 13mpg, ugh! - but I'm not afraid to run it to the store on a sunny day just to have fun, or take it out to dinner, or just...drive around (and dodge the cicadas!). I just want it to sound good when I do. Not new-Chrysler-300-silent (I do want to drown out the old-car squeaks and rattles LOL)...but not stupid-flowmaster-noisy, either.
 
You might check the threads on this (they're lengthy, lol). I've said selecting mufflers reminds me of reading a menu at a Greek restaurant. The posts though are educational. I had FM 50's and just installed Accurate Exhaust hemi mufflers as several members liked them. They're pricy; but a nice sound and much quieter. I'll qualify my teen has headers, X, and 3". Anyway, the posts get into some detail of the sounds and some have audio clips...
 
I have an old '50's driver, all stock,V8. Shortly after getting it many moons ago I had dual exhaust with a pair of Walker glass packs put on it. It sounds old school, nice mellow tone, no drone. I can drive it all day.
 
Everyone has their own likes-dislikes. I installed a pair of Accurate Exhaust Hemi mufflers, and they were too quiet for me. Took them off and installed Thrush welded chambered mufflers $29.99 ea. Sounds great and no drone. (Factory style turn down tail pipes from Accurate.)
 
Dynomax super turbo mufflers will give you a nice classic sound, no drone, and not be loud at cruise on your engine, I assume you have full tail pipes too?
 
Dynomax super turbos are the inexpensive choice and they flow well and are pretty quiet.

I wanted a quiet muffler for the convertible and used the Walker Quiet-flo SS (stainless steel) muffler.
You can still hear the exhaust, so they are not super quiet, but the stainless version makes them a bit expensive.

I looked up the Factory replacement hemi muffler from Walker, the 18230 Sound-FX muffler and Amazon had them for $36.78

Yes, full tailpipes to the rear bumper, with small turn-downs just under the reverse lights.

I'd forgotten about the super turbos - I ran them on my Satellite years ago. Might look into those as well, thanks for the reminder!
 
Is what I bought for the Dart off Amazon for cheap and free delivery.. These are 2.5 in and outs. Haven't got them on yet..

I put some Rock Auto cheapo glass pack mufflers on my 65 Coronet 318 Poly motor and I love the sound. After getting up to cruise speed you can barely hear them. Not that I can hear much anymore! Nice sound at idle.

Never worried about it but, I would think an "h" or "x" pipe would help.

I had a similar problem when I bought my 69 Roadrunner. It has flowmasters as well and sounded great at idle but droned crazy when driving. I was looking to replace the entire exhaust because an earlier"restoration" installed a custom 2 1/2 setup that fit like crap. But then I thought to try some resonators and found some stainless models at Summit Racing. I cut the exhaust pipes along side the gas tank and spliced in the resonators. WOW. What a difference. The idle still sound great and NO DRONE when driving at ANY speed. I think the resonators were like $50 each. I great fix!!!

That’s an interesting perspective. But they work like a charm and was a super easy fix.

Anyone have or know of a sound clip for these?

I have some repop hemi style muffler on my car and IMO its to quiet for my taste .
I would like just a little bit more rumble but not obnoxious And NO drone of any kind
 
This clip is the 505" stroker, mild hydraulic roller cam with TTI headers, X-pipe exhaust and the Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers.
The engine itself sounds sort of loud, I think maybe all the rollerized parts (Lifters, Rockers, Cam Gear, Thrust Button)
