Is This Oil Pan Full

Less is more. Engine masters did a segment on this subject. Watch it, you may be surprised at what you find.

I saw that too, very interesting. But an oil level that you can get away with on a dyno, might not be real safe in a moving car.
But that test, and another i saw where EM compared an ordinary street/strip pan to an $800 wet sump pan on a stroker bbc, sure make one think about putting a real good pan on the engine.

I saw that episode too.
I also heard over the years that stock class racers only run 2 or 3 qts.
Andy F in his book said he tried it and smoked the bearings.
I got Miladon 30930 pan and pickup Friday (thanks Todd Marsh.)
Just need time to install.

Raced again yesterday. As long as I come out of the burnout slow, oil pressure is good the whole run.
Probably not getting it real hot, water temp is staying at 180, and oil pressure is 60 psi at 1000 rpm.
I believe I will try 40 wt again at next oil change.

Here is a baffle template I made years ago. Print it onto 8.5x11" paper, glue it on sheet metal, cut and bend as shown and tack weld it in place.

That looks like a very nice template. I considered going that route, but I don't weld, and my pan has quite a bit of pitting on the outside. I was afraid it might burn through.
So I did get a Miladon pan.

At least get one with baffles! I uncovered my pickup on a hard stop one day......no baffles means no control of the slosh. And what are you running for bearing clearances for the 50wt oil?
So many are crazy now.

If the pic in post #1 is 6 qts in the pan, I say that's just right, 1 qt will be in the filter so the level will be even with the front flat. Baffles like the 402 pan would be good. Post #40 proves you need the baffles.
The 7 qt Milodon pan with a windage tray will be great. Check where the level is with 7 qts in the pan. Post the pic. Thanks

So, no matter what pan you have, stock or aftermarket, filling the pan to 1.5" below the pan rail takes it to exactly full on the dipstick, as according to factory specification. Of course, mods to your engine could potentially change what you desire. IMO, your pan needs baffles, although must admit, I've drag raced a 5 quart pan unbaffled without apparent oiling issues, while watching the pressure on decel like a hawk. On a #187 pan, 4.5 quarts fill the sump to look just like your pic in post#1, the other pint would remain in the filter and throughout the engine elsewhere. HTH, Lefty71
