Greetings, my Mopar owners……my Carter AVS Four Barrel carburetor is pretty much at the end of its life span…..I’m not saying that it can’t be repaired but it would require a lot of work…Now my casting date reads D9 4615SA….April 1969……now can I get by with a carburetor that may have for example A9, C9 etc….that would be accepted as one that may have gone on my car…..I have a numbers matching 383HP four speed car….just inquiring as if I need to find one exactly as mine or could possibly have a slight variation in numbers and or letters….I’ve looked at numerous carbs that came close but alway off a letter or number….I’d appreciate knowledge responses from you…..I’m really to the point that I’m going to put on a Edelbrock AVS 650 manual choke carb and stick mine in a box…..it’s really to the point that It’s not run right for decades and quite honestly I’m surprised it even starts….

All that is is the date stamp! Send yours to Woodruff Carbs for rebuild, he has a good reputation here..

You can get by with production numbers a month or 2 prior to the engine assembly date. The casting date on the block, heads and intake may be 6 months earlier. (and there are guys on here that are much more knowledgeable than I am) A temp carb is the way to go. If you must have the original carb (or correct number and date code) send it in and have it restored. Not just rebuilt. It probably needs throttle shafts/bushings because it is a 4 speed carb. (throttle opens and closes every gear change X4 to get to highway speeds. Auto Transmissions only do that once) There are some excellent carb restorers. One is Harold Demes. Check him out on You Tube.

Another plug for Dave and his team at Woodruff Carbs. Here is a before and after.

I've tried to have my cake and eat it too. I have a date code correct NOS Carter AVS, that I carry in the trunk of my '68 GTX when I show it. I run the car with a Holley Street Avenger, which drives better than the original Carter did.
