440 engine I'd pad number

Ever been rebuilt? I know machinists that stamp stuff so they know what goes where.

This is a friend's engine block that he's had lying around for decades. I seriously doubt that any forgery is going on with this one.
No, you definitely took my comment wrong...I was just saying that there was apparently weird stuff going on back then, and maybe, sometimes "we've" been too quick to call these unusual occurances fakes.

I was definitely not questioning the authenticity of your buddy's block - just acknowledging that weird stuff did apparently happen.

Ok, Ok, just ship the block to me and I’ll do an extensive forensic study on the matter. I’ll ship it back in a decade or so. Kind of like government work. Oh ****, did I just get this moved to the Political Forum?

I knew a chick with nice boobs, but one was a little bigger than the other.....kinda like that 3
I knew a girl like that too. She entered a wet T-shirt contest, and came in first and third!

First and third. Who's on 2nd.... Let's knock off this baseball talk, and get back to T&A.

I don't think that it matters that there are two different fonts for the number three on that pad. It could have been what was used at a different station along the engine assembly factory. Not all the stampings had to be put there at the same time.

Defiantly a three. In fact, it looks double stamped. Thoughts?

OK, so for stuff we all know: F = 1970, 440 is Cubic Inches, 1 23 is January 23rd, the build date, HP is High Performance and 2 is second shift.

Other stampings are (thanks to @Al K):
A = .020 oversize cylinder bores
Diamond = Oversize tappets
E = Cast Crankshaft
HP = High Performance
L or LC = Low compression
Maltese Cross = .001" undersize main bearing journals
Maltese Cross & an X .010" = undersized crankshaft rod journals
O.S. = .005" oversize valve stems
P = Premium Fuel
R = Regular Fuel
RX or MX = All main and rod journals .010" undersized
S = Special engine
WT or TW = Water Test
X = .010" undersize crankshaft

So I am just out on a limb here and brainstorming:
  • Did it not get finished until 3rd shift (i.e. started 2nd shift, hence HP2 but not finished until third)? I a not aware of engines being built on third shift though.
  • It definitely seems the "3" was stamped after the other stampings - it is a different font. Could the 3 mean some kind of issue (or test) happened to it after it was built?

Could be a builder afterwards that has performed work. Perhaps it’s .030 over bore from a rebuild? This is what a builder did to a 383 HP motor I picked up a while ago to indicate .020 over bore....

Question on these blocks. What stops someone from milling the pad flat on a block and calling it a "warranty" block?
