1964 rear gear ratio

upload_2021-6-23_8-42-59.png

Here you go. Ratios and what they came in. See the 8-1/4" hiding up there in the /6.

That's a different 8-1/4. You're thinking of the one used from '39 - '57. There was another that looked IDENTICAL to an 8-3/4 and swapped too! just had a little ring gear.
Yes that’s what I was thinking. Well I learned something today. I have never seen the 1 that swapped with a 8 3/4. Kim

That tells you what was standard, something else might have been ordered, or even put in later. Until you check out what you have....you wont know.
But standard equipment is still a pretty good bet (bet, haha).

Maybe a silly question,,, But ,, being a Canadian car,, would there of been a difference, because I'm quite sure that mine is original and is an 8 3/4 .

Don't be confused with the 8 1/4 (the one with a cover)that didn't have the drop out pumpkin. This looks just like any 8 3/4 pumpkin but differs internally.

I'll have to check my numbers and clarify my findings again.
Thanks darter6

Yeah, this post confused me at first too, but i finally got it after digesting all the help here, and i learned something.
The early pre 57 rears are dropout 8 1/4. The later Salisbury style, with the removable rear cover, are 8 1/4 too. Then apparently there is an 8 3/4 dropout center that has a smaller 8 1/4 gear in it for the sixties slant sixes, with a oddball gear ratio not normal for an original 8 3/4.
Thanks for todays education guys.
Now im headed out to the garage with a tape measure, to look at my 741 case.

I learned something as well. So these older 8 1/4 center sections use a conventional 8 3/4 style housing?

Yes, remarkably similar and interchangeable. Odd ratios are the giveaway externally. Somewhere, possibly on this page, are some photos of one but I’m not finding them to link to.

Also there is a 657 case. I got one from a 58 1/2 ton Dodge truck.
The gear ratio is 3.58. Pinion size is the same as the 741.

So, is my 63 SF a 3.23? It has a 70 400 motor, but I don't know if the 727 is original with the original 318. Please see photo. And will these numbers show where and when manufactured? Thanks!

Your 727 cant be the original one
The 727 For a 318 is a small block and the 727 for a 400 is a big block
The internals are basically the same but the housings are different
