Correct Front Suspension Paint Colors

Hey guys,

Can anyone confirm the correct colors for the front suspension?
I know that some parts were dipped, but were they semi-gloss black or gloss black?
And what parts were left natural?

Chargerjase provided me with a good starting point, but I am just looking for some confirmation. I'm almost at this point in my rebuild so I just wanted to be sure before I started applying color.

There was a scene on GYC and I believe Mark dipped it in gloss.

What part did he dip?

I also remember seeing a clip on GYC about how far up wax covered the lower control arm. But then I read a thread on another forum saying how Mark messed up in that clip.
 
Some that I'm fairly certain on. Maybe some of the paint daub guys can correct / fill in some more for you:

Upper A arms- bare

Spindles- bare

Lower arms-cosmoline dipped vertically to within roughly 2" from the outside end.

K frame- dipped "gloss" black

Torsion bars- dipped "gloss" black

Sway bar- Dipped "gloss" black

The "gloss" black was kinda cheap and was either not super glossy or faded quickly.
I knocked the gloss down some with an additive when I shot mine.
 
There's a Krylon spray can of "Bettery Protectant" that looks a great deal like "Cosmoline".

It needs generous clear coat, though or rust gets through it.

It can also sub for CAD plate in a pinch.

Your list was great! I guess all that is left are the struts, centerlink, tie rod ends, and sleeves.

Is this lower control arm indicative of your description? I'm assuming the part that wasn't dipped was left bare.

I bought some "quasimoline" from resto Rick. You can google search for his site and info.
 
Besides going the RPM coating route, has anyone found any good paint products that duplicate the natural finish look?

There is a lot of different stages of cast iron. Some areas I used a cast iron gray, some areas I used a silver.

Did you use different shades on your centerlink vs struts?
I used the same shade. The center link and struts I used Seymour Cast Blast, cast iron gray. This is a paint that a shop uses that rebuilds rear axles for semis as well as cars and they sweat by it. It was also the same paint used on my differential. The lca is wear I used the silver.

Thanks. I like the shade that paint gave your parts. I was originally looking for more of a steel paint since those parts are stamped steel, but I may reconsider now.

What did you use to reproduce the wax affect on your lca?
 
I reached some GYC episodes trying to do some research
But I saw conflicting colors for the sway bar and centerlinks
Sometimes they were black, sometimes they were natural

Does anyone know if that depended on the year?
 
Sway bar - never figured it out myself for sure. Last year when I rebuilt mine I did a little informal research and again sprayed it a sort of cast blast metal color. I looked at road tests from back in the 60s when they had a car on the lift and found several photos from the 64 and 65 years that seem to show pretty much everything was black under there - LCAs, steering linkage, sway bar, strut rods. The sway bars looked sort of mottled like they just had 80% black coverage. Of course these are old B&W photos. But I couldn't find any from the 67 year and probably suppliers and coatings varied.

It's even possible they had a point on the line where they did some sort of sloppy black out treatment - possibly by spray or maybe even by mitt, to help hide some of the underneath.

I wonder if there are any old Chrysler plant employees on this site who recall some of the process??
 
My understanding was that the sway bars were completely welded up with rubber bushings and dipped in a tank of semi-gloss black paint and drip dried. The vendors had standard parts that they made for other industries that were painted the same way in these large open tanks and they just used them. In the seventies, you could still find the black paint on the rubber bushings that hadn't "flexed" off yet. Found this on some low mileage wrecking yard vehicles out west.
