New project - Gran National "style" '73 Charger

My buddy is building a '73 SE big block Charger at my place and has acquired a couple parts cars during the process. One is this 73 Rallye Charger that we found on Farcebook Marketplace (I think someone did a thread on it awhile ago). It was cheap and came with two pickup loads of parts including a hideaway headlight grille, '71 R/T taillights, a bunch of new and performance big block parts and a new set of Cooper Cobra tires. He bought it for the parts and the car has been sitting in my side driveway for about a year now. Well maybe it's been there too long because I traded him out of it this week. It wasn't like I needed another project but it has kinda grown on me.

The car is missing a lot of pieces, especially in the interior and has rust in the usual places but it still has the disc brakes, 8 3/4, a rear swaybar and a core 440. I am going to begin the process of reviving it into a street legal mid 70's Grand National style stock car (no it won't be a 43 clone). I'll post updates as I work on it between all the other projects and collect up the parts I need.

The original paint was blue, not purple?

I've actually seen one M code 400-2 Rallye.

Idk man, to each his own. Imho, if it's a real A57 car I'd take it to close to original. Maybe headers all that jazz considering no #'s motor etc....just not many of those things lying around like a few years ago. I had an A57 P, blue on blue survivor back in the late 90's. Same stories the old dudes at the shows told us, now I get to tell mine cuz I didnt listen. They bring bank that way also, closer to original appearance etc. In my opinion and experiences anyway

We contemplated that but the '73/74 Chargers don't seem to bring the money that the '71 or '72's do and with all the stuff it's missing and needs done or replaced, I can't really see the ROI restoring it. I do not want to save it though.

Did some clean up on it yesterday before it got too hot. Removed the remains if the smashed rear valance and trailer hitch and mocked up a set of old asphalt 27/10x 15 slicks. The tires will be a little narrow when they get mounted on 8" wheels.

Nice....Idk I sold a real nice survivor 73 SE, big block power window air car with 80k miles for 12k about 15yrs ago, they can bring it depending what you have to work with these days as you don't see them just sitting all over so to speak any more. But I get it. And hey, I have a rust free 73 rear tip valance if interested!
 
It's been too damn hot to get much accomplished after work. I did get the all the warped, rotted, chalked up interior and the mouse nests cleaned out. There wasn't much salvageable inside except the metal rear window trim and metal trim over the doors. Floor boards are pretty bad so I ordered a set of front and rear replacements

Next step is to get the rear suspension set up and get rid if the isoclamp system. I dug through the parts pile and came up with original springs from my '71 Road Runner, some extra leaves and clamps to build a set of heavy leaf springs.

I also ran across a set of slash cut tips that I picked up somewhere. I had a squirrel moment and was curious if I could turn them into oval tips for side exhaust. The one on the right is what I came up with after a little time with the press and a hammer.

When I saw Gran National I started thinking GNX. I don't think I've seen a turbo 3.9 mopar V6 in one of these yet... :D

Oh God no! That was my fat fingers on the keyboard and I can't change the title now. It's getting a 440.
 
Welcome from Michigan. Very nice looking project you have going. It's gonna look great when done. Gotta love the Rallye's.:thumbsup:
 
Made a 200 mile road trip today to pick up parts. I found a guy that used to build circle track cars and was cleaning out his shop. Scored a bunch of misc. parts from him and grabbed the new wedge fuel cell and big block spool mounts that I had found in a couple other ads on the way. Total cost for everything was $300.

Started working on the rear suspension. Having to do it in the gravel in front of the shop because the GTX and Road Runner are in there and if I do it on the slab out front I'd block the roll up door.

Time to get rid of the rear iso clamp system and stiffen the housing. If anybody needs the iso clamp pieces, let me know. I picked up an Addco swaybar for an E-body at a Mopar swap meet last weekend thinking I could adapt it. It came with an erector set of clamp on brackets that didn't look solid enough so I modified and welded it all together andthe housing incorporating a lower housing brace. Swaybar bracket u-bolt basically now just retains the bushing mount to the pedestal welded to the housing.
