So I'm about to start re-assembling my engine and looking for advice on a solvent for my parts.
Can't find the old Varsol solvent any longer and really don't like the mineral spirits version.
Does anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks

I've used kerosene...just need to rinse a bit more afterwards to remove some residue, unless you have a while to wait before reassembly, for it to air-dry. Spritz of brakleen does it for me.

If you have a Tractor Supply near you they have a good product. Have to drive a ways for me, but the
supplies are drying up!

We have them all over, do you know the name of the product?

Ya was hoping for something a little less volatile but will probably be the closest thing to the old Varsol..

I discovered this as a alternative to my mineral spirits in my parts washer tank. I just sprayed this TOTALLY AWESOME onto a old 340 bellhousing sing and let it soak in, then brush it lightly and squirt it with a hose or better yet a pressure washer. And wow! It had over a 1/4" of nasty grease and it just washed away. And non toxic! You can find it at dollar general or Walmart. And it's inexpensive.

Connect a hose w an on/off ball-valve to the bottom of your parts washer and save the 5 gallon containers. Drain solvent into containers when it builds up crud at the bottom. Clean the bottom, place a t-shirt doubled up over the container opening and pour back into solvent tank. Stuff will last "Forever"! Been using the same PSC 1000 for over 5 yrs now.

I’ve been contemplating a washer. What do you guys do with the old stuff. When it’s time to change it?

Right... Ive had my tank for 35 years..... Only Super Agitene and TSC'c PSC1000 the whole time.... I've cleaned it, but the solvent itself has only slowly (very slowly) evaporated over time. I've never disposed of a drop of the stuff.

If you own a diesel truck, Filter it and pour it in the fuel tank. You want a 3-1 ratio of fuel to cleaner.

(Don’t do this. I am joking)

A buddy DOES like to mix used engine oil in his diesel fuel. Sometimes ATF and other waste oils.

My uncle used ATF as a lubricant in diesel but quit when he found out about red dye diesel and the fines he could get even though he wasn't using red dye non taxed diesel.

Hey Mike , ck out a product at Lowe’s called Kurd Kutter , it’s great product but not for final wash , but cleans as the name suggests! JC

Been using the Tractor Supply stuff in my home shop. Stuff is great. Have run a bunch of nasty parts thru my washer and the fluid is still kicking butt probably 3-4 years later. I don't think I'll need to change for a couple more years at least.

I've been using kerosene since I got my parts washer, probably 30 years ago or so. Never have changed it. I don't use it very often though.

If anyone wants to spend the time and the money, there is an instruction sheet somewhere on-line
that explains how you can buy a Little Giant pump, an oil filter base that mounts on the outside of your
parts cleaning tank, and a two quart oil filter for a GM truck to filter the fluid and will keep everything
nice and squeeky for a long time. Google parts washer upgrade or similar.
