Car trailers sturdy enough to haul a B body.

My recommendations? Get one with a decent winch. And when you find the specs you need? Go one level higher and heavier. A little over kill easily out weighs not enough?

Ive got an open deck 14ft steel car trailer, that i have owned for probably 30 yrs, and i wouldnt take three times what i paid for it today. I have hauled 33 imperials, multiple b-bodys, 4200 lb big block impala race cars, and a one ton dually on it, with no complaints. I would not own a wood deck open trailer, thanks.
As im sure you know, you have to match trailer and load to the tow vehicle. I did use my trailer to tow the impala over the mountains to palmdale with a big block ranchero that weighed less than the impala, and that was NOT
the ideal setup. Replaced the ranch with a 1 ton dually, worked MUCH better.
With your given of using your 1/2 ton, i think Vintage Chromemoly's rec is excellent.
Edit: and spring for a winch, any kind, even a chinese. I did without one for many years, i dont know how i could have been SO stupid! Ive got a 9000lb hf on mine, dont know what i would do without it!
2nd edit. Not much space where i wanted to park the trailer at my cali house, the 14 footer fit, an eighteen wouldnt.

I've thought about getting a winch - more times than I imagined having to load a car that's not running. I had help but it sucked! I would think it makes loading a running car easier too since it can be lined up easier than trying to tell from inside the car and driving it in.

What would happen if you had one of those machine gun bras on as a mask and walked in to a bank?

2006 Aluma 20’ trailer, winch in the box, my brother’s Torino, 750 mile trip, Illinois to Arkansas trip was a breeze on the back of my 1/2 ton 4x4 pickup with the aluminum gem.
Sure it will cost more but light, smooth and not much maintenance. Money well spent and probably perfect for your pickup too. Oh and I built a plywood box that was used to haul furniture.

Don't buy a Carson trailer. Cheaply made hack fest. Sketchy wiring, tires, wheels etc. I'd go 18' just so the tail end of the car can be a little forward of the rear of the trailer. For sure 4 wheel brakes.

Too bad you are in Cali. Over here in the South you can find a good trailer builder almost every 100 miles.

I have a 25' Larimore Steel deck car hauler with electric brakes 3500# axles and hitch pull. It easily carries a B-body. I hauled a 64 Buick Electra 225 on it and that is one massive car. I bought my trailer in Cleveland, TN and it was cheap when new. ($2k) but that was years ago and right now anything made of steel is skyrocketting in cost. If I cannot get a good weight balance on it I use a sway-reduction hitch. They make towing nice. I used to tow with a 94 Ford F-250 with the 5.0L and it really struggled in the mountains. Now I have a 2019 Chevy 2500HD Duramax and that thing could pull my house down the road.

Agreed^^^. Trailers have nearly doubled in price nationwide over the past 18 months, with the price of steel and wood skyrocketing. A nice 18' car hauler (16+2) in Oklahoma would've ran about $2,500 for a steel deck, and a little more for wood. Now? You are looking at $4,600 for the cheapest open hauler, and I've seen the steel haulers up near $7K recently. It is insane! And needless to say, trailer thefts have increased, too. Oklahoma has stupid laws for trailers. If it's non-commercial and under 10K# GVW, no tag/plate is required, but you can get a plate for $15.00 annually...but no title. Commercial trailers have different rules, and do require tag/title. As does any travel trailer.

My 19' wood deck/steel dovetail open hauler (16+3) was stolen from my property June 25, 2015. I keep hoping that I'll see it, but it probably went to Mexico, never to be seen again. I also keep hoping that the thief will die in a very painful way...perhaps hauling a stolen tractor on my stolen trailer behind his stolen pickup that he wraps around a bridge abutment at 80 mph in a fiery display of pain, carnage and misery; with the trailer tongue impaled through his thick-assed skull...

A man can dream.

I was shopping for an enclosed trailer, to use as a car hauler, and to move about three housholds of stuff out of california. I was looking at a 20 or 24 footer, until i realized how tight a 20 would be, and how little weight margin they have.
I was completely disgusted by the diference in prices comparing the west coast to the east. At the time, there was almost a 1/3 premium on the west coast. A used 20 here was more than a new 24 in the south.
Then i found a box truck that can carry a small car, tow my open trailer, or move half a house of stuff, with a rebuilt diesel, for about half the price of an enclosed trailer.
I guess i will have to be happy with my little open trailer for now.

That would surely require a bigger truck to drag it.
My thoughts are that the move, if and when it happens, will require the services of a multi-car hauler.

For perspective.....
The Road Runner is sitting on a 16 foot trailer.

The Charger is on an 18 footer:

My brother has one much like the ones you posted, even with the dovetail it's a pain to load cars with minimal ground clearance. I usually have to add several feet of ramp using planks and blocking just to get on it with anything down around 5"-6" of clearance. For car hauling I'd really look at the loading side of it, tilt bed, lower sitting trailer, one with longer ramps, longer dovetail? For general purpose and the occasional car hauling, these are great trailers just not ideal for cars IMO.

I really like the wooden beds, if you're ever hauling thin plywood, sheet metal, or anything else that's hard to get a good hold on you just screw it down. I've even fastened down blocking to keep a milling machine from sliding around as well.

This is roughly a 6,000lbs load, my 1500 had zero problems doing 70mph with it back there. Trailer brakes are a must for me!

...and probably $9k on the west coast, cause it would cost that to get it here.

The open deck trailer I have is made by Big Tex, it is a 6000 pound car hauler. It is 18 foot long, it has what is called a super wide deck (which I needed for by wide in the *** 72 Road Runner with 14x32's). It has a 4 foot beaver tail on it. Electric brakes on 15 inch wheels and tires. Came with stake pockets install all around the outside of the deck. It is a wood deck, they do make it with a metal deck also. I used to haul it with my 1990 Dodge 1/2 ton with a 318, and it did fine, even at our altitude. I now have a 2010 Dodge 1/2 ton with a Hemi, hauls it with no problem. I bought this trailer new in 1997, I have hauled it with cars all over the country. It is the smoothest and straightest towing trailer I have ever had.

I am not interested in anything shorter than an 18 footer. A 20 foot that tilts sure seems ideal. I had preferred a steel deck but may be willing to consider a wood deck.

I will second trailers being easy in the South.

There are two dealers/builders down the street from me and another across the street from the local wal-mart.

I only have a 5x8 but the build quality is excellent.
Made by Cary-on out of GA.
They are sold at Northern Tool and they make larger ones.

For cars, I own a dolly and have pulled cars and trucks across the state with my 5.9 Dakota.
In FL you do not have to pay registration or license on a "device designed to transport ONLY automobiles".

Aluminum trailer, lowest to the ground you can get, torsion axles, dexter axles preferred, biggest brakes / bearings you can get and heavy ply tires last longer, non scothlock wiring harness! LED lights, removable fenders, aluminum ramps, lots of tie downs well mounted, a well built winch mount with a good winch and battery/ tool box. I’m just putting all my ideas out there for ya..

Yep added box and winch on mine with Anderson connector to my truck battery best idea no extra battery to lug around

Sounds like a great trailer! (Also sounds like ten or twelve thousand dollars on the west coast, for an open trailer.)

I think the big decision is do you only want a car hauler or do you want a multi purpose trailer, once you have a trailer you end up finding all kinds of crap to haul. A 20' tilt would give you both. The biggest problem with the aluminum ones like you posted is the fenders, they're great for cars but suck for forklifts. Being able to be loaded by a forklift can be a huge advantage. I've had full bundles of drywall, my 2 post lift, lumber from the sawmill and many other things loaded that would have been a handful to do by hand.

Knowing what you do, projects that I see you tackle, a multi purpose trailer might be handy for years to come?

Whatever you get make sure it doesn’t have Chinese bearings in the hubs !
