Hey Guys need your knowledge! Looking at a 68 road runner, the owner states that the body stamping's are the Sales order number on the trim tag. shouldn't they be the last numbers of the vin??

If that's the case there would be nothing to tie the body to the vin. dash's can easily be replaced.

I think he’s full of sh*t……

Well your wrong... 69 was the first year the VIN was used as a body stamping.... 68 they used the SO #... To tie the SO to the VIN you need the build sheet or the original window sticker....

He's right. As far as I know, sometime in 68 they changed from SO to a partial VIN. One could tie the SO with the VIN on the broadcast sheet.

If the fenger tag matches the body stamping, and the tag looks original, then you will at least know if it is a road runner, and some of the options, it had.

I stand corrected….!
So if you don’t have the build sheet of original window sticker you still can’t be sure right?

look on the driver side engine block top rear behind valve cover, and cooresponding number on transmission.at least on 383 HP engines, last eight of the VIN#
roadrunner and superbee, R/T and GTX. In 1969 VIN went down under passenger motor mount near oil pan rail.
the fender tag will have a code for the 383 HP and transmission.

My Charger is a July 68 build and it has the SO numbers stamped, as a point of reference. I would think verifying the fender tag options against the car would provide some measure of verification.

All 1968 model year and older mopars are this way.

full year 1968, not any partial year stuff.

Ok That Helped! Another question This car 68 Roadrunner is a 383 4 speed, Looks to 100% correct to the trim tag options. However this car has a 8 3/4 rear. Didn't all 4 speed BB cars have Dana 60's?

I have a few 68's, those built prior to dec 31 67 don't have them. The one built in april does
at least in my case.
there are some older posts on FBBO as well if you google the topic from 2011. The general prognosis was and still is the law required the stamp as of 1 Jan 68. some plants did it earlier in the model year voluntarily, and others didn't.

Nope. Only 440/hemi.

they did it in 68 for the 69 model year? so you're both right :D

partial vins did make it to engines and trans for 68s...... mid year, I believe

The stamping of VINs in 1968 is an under researched topic (This would be a nice niche for someone looking for a project and contribute to the hobby......)

It appears when the VINs appear varies by plant. I've seen 109311 VIN from 68 StL putting the car in the first month of production meaning the stamping at St. Louis happened pretty early in the year; not mid year.
Some plant VINs (specifically Jefferson) don't seem top show up until later in the model year.
Some say only the HP cars got VIN stamps. I think this could be disputed by finding 318 or /6 cars with VIN stamps or LP 440 C bodies.

So, limited, research continues on this topic.

So let me see if i got this right.....
A 68 would have the SO number on the body (trunk lip and radiator core support) and a partial or complete vin on the block/bellhousing behind the driver-side head.... or not.
???
